I've always had a thing for Italian cars & motorcycles, and Ducati to be specific.

Everytime i think of buying a ducati - i back off after hearing what their 6000 mile service bills can rack up to. I've also heard stories of the long waits that some of the owners had to put up with due to some parts being shipped form Italy. Not sure how much of that is variable, but i have a few questions for you guys.

1) What's a good ducati bike to start out with? (not in terms of starting riding), but in terms of entering the "Duck World".

2) Is there like a model that's better (service wise) compared to some other model? (Both being Ducati bikes ofcourse). (SS bikes)

3) I'm sure just like any other motorcycle, when it comes to service and longevity - it comes down to how you keep/service/take care of the bike. But what parts are usually expensive on these Ducatis that sets them apart from the Japanese bikes?

Any other ducati information on specific models will be helpful.

Thanks in advance guys!

PS: This is for street riding, not track riding.

PPS: I'm not sure if i dig the new 1098 look.

Just giving you a hard time buddy.

Heres your answers by the way, feel free to call me if you want to talk about it some more.

Typically the 748 / 996 engines are easier to work on then the Testeretta engines (749 / 999).

Besides normal basic maintenance, every 6000 miles the valves should be checked / adjusted and belt tension set.
At 12,000 miles / every 2 years the timing belts need to be changed.

There's other items you'll want to check while in there; TPS setting, air bleed setting, throttle body synch etc.

Neither job is real difficult, just very time consuming and very detail oriented.

Parts availability is a shoot. Since Ducati brought their main distribution center back to Italy, sometimes it can take a week or so to get some parts.

Hope this helps! Like I said, give me a shout if you need more info.

The maintenance issue would be my main concern.

Besides normal basic maintenance, every 6000 miles the valves should be checked / adjusted and belt tension set.
At 12,000 miles / every 2 years the timing belts need to be changed.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This part here is not too bad sounding....
Just the ducks you would expend maintaining a Duc is the main factor..As I'm sure many would agree.

Get an Aprilia. Buy it used so that you don't get hit with the initial depretiation.

I had a Mille a few years ago. One of the best bikes I've ever had. NEVER had any issues of any sort. Previous owner had had it serviced at Motorcycles Unlimited, so I knew there wouldn't be any concerns there either.

I bought it with very low miles and got a great deal. I sold it about a year later because I just never used it (not duie to the bike, just lost all desire to ride in Houston streets). I sold it for the exact same amount I paid for within one day of posting it for sale.

I find it hard to believe since his worse enemy (Hayden) may be riding one next year.

Where did you hear that? I know they were courting him before he re-signed with Honda last year. And they were after Marco Melandri, but Gresini had the option to match their offer and did so. That's how they ended up "stuck" with Stoner as a last resort.

Geek!! Its common knowledge that Ducati might pick up Haydn to back up Stoner
