Best race all year! From the roadkill to the full race battle I was on edge the whole time.

I think honda added vtec to MM's bike the way it was pulling like that Duc on the straights. I think Rossi and Lorenzo would have benifited from going up a tooth or two on their rear sprocks.

A change in sprocket is no replacement for hp. The Honda's and ducatis are always 8-10km/h faster on the straights. But if you think you know how to setup gearing better than engineers that have been part of several world titles go for it.

Honda also lowered his tire pressure by .248 lbs

And all season the Tech3 Yamaha's have been consistently faster 3-5kmh than the Movistar Factory Yamaha Team.

It hasn't been exactly clear as to why, both have same fuel limit, riders aren't smaller, lease bikes presumably won't have more HP than their factory counterparts, yet they are faster. Not quicker, just higher top speed.

But consider a relativly new and unknown rule that each team must choose the gear ratios they will use for the entire season prior to the first race of the season and it offers some plausible explaination.

The comprimse is teams are limited to 24 pairs of gears for all 6 speeds. They can choose how to distribute them, but must declare the ratios for each speed of the gearbox and can use no others.

So if they want more than 4 possibilites for one of the speeds, like say top gear, they must give up a one from another of the 6 speeds.

Considering the Factory Yamaha's have been a class above on corner speed, balance and drive out of turns, but down on top speed including to their own sattalite team,.. it makes you wonder if they have chosen their gear ratios for the year differently.

Teams are also allowed to choose 4 ratios on the external drive sprockets but changing those would start to influence other things which impact cornering and drive, such as the angle between the chain and swing arm. Changing this can either make the front push when applying throttle mid turn as the rear suspension compresses or make the rear kick out and not hookup as the chain force extends the rear suspension when leaned over and getting on the gas.

So I'd expect the teams would rather change internal gearbox ratios than external sprockets to not alter that balance and geometry. Given the indicators, the factory yamaha team could have chosen to have more options in the middle of the gear box at the expense of optimizing top gear for all the differnt tracks.

I'm not saying they are not down on HP, truth is we really don't know, but it seems there is more than fuel and HP at play here. So the idea that they may not be geared for the top end at one of the fastest tracks on the calendar is not a stupid comment at all...it could be closer to reality than we know.

, that would have been amazing if the moto3 rider had room to back it into that turn before he crashed out.

Or they take a different line that gets them up to a higher speed.

Exactly. He is of zero concern. The guy on the yamaha only needs to worry about the other guy on the yamaha, no one on a honda is a threat.

I lol'd at the corner speed difference being attributed to line choice. This is moto gp, the line is the line, deviate from it one foot and you're passed. Besides, I'm pretty sure honda riders could just change their line if it was that easy, voila yamaha corner speed.
