That law really meant nothing. Law or not, CHP hadn't wrote a single ticket for lane splitting in 40+ years. All states have different laws, that's why State rights given. If you don't like CA laws simple, stay in TX or move elsewhere.

I'm getting more comfortable with it since I started riding. Even used the sidewalk a few times trying to get down briar forest

It's been a rough summer for me. Iv'e been pulled over 3 times while splitting. Twice by moto cops- they were cool about it, no tickets. A metro officer in an SUV threatened to arrest me for reckless driving if he caught me again-no ticket but... It makes ya cautious.

Up the middle, between lines, while traffic was stopped or crawling? Thanks for the data point. Even if reckless didn't stick, it sure would suck wriggling out of it.

I stay between the far left and center lane(Least amount of risk IMO). Stopped and or crawling. If traffic gets up over 20 MPH, I fall back in. I do my best to split as respectful as possible.

I thought they passed a law that if traffic was deadlocked that motorcycles could slowly ride the shoulder to prevent accidents.

I respectfully lane split and have never had a problem with the police...people get mad at me and have done some stupid but in the end it doesn't matter what they do because most of the time they would get in more trouble anyway. i only do it when the go-pro is running which is most of the time.

Same. People get mad and do weird but it doesn't matter because I can always get away from them with ease. I have split past a couple cops, neither batted an eyelash. People in Houston wanted to kill me for splitting but people in Austin are too oblivious to notice.
