BMW patents W3 engines
New engine designs spark rumours of a new BMW cruiser or power cruiser
BMW has submitted patent applications for two different air-cooled W3 pushrod engines.
The engines - which have been designed to fit in the same space as a two-cylinder engine, but offer a third more capacity - are rumoured to be used a in a new cruiser or power cruiser.
According to the patents, both concepts would carry a gear-driven balance shaft to help minimise vibration from the three-cylinder engine.
The document said: ‘the invention represents an as of yet unknown type of W-3 reciprocating piston internal combustion engine.’
