I'm curious to know how a car that is photographed is identified and determined to be speeding. Does a person have to sit there and match up license plate numbers? It just doesn't sound like a fool proof system.

I think the basics of it are: you pass camera 1 and it records the time and takes a picture of your plate. Something in the computer system probably recognizes and identifies your tag #. Then the same process is repeated when you pass through the 2nd camera. The computer probably matches the 2 tag #s and does the math to determine how fast your average speed was to cover the distance between cameras.

My question is if this will be a point applying moving violation, like a regular speeding ticket. Or if it will be just a fine, like red light cameras and toll cameras.
The point being is that they would have to prove you were operating the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Red light cameras can capture a pic of the drivers face, but surely they couldnt get a clear pic of a driver at highway speeds, especially since the ones they are after are speeding afterall.

I see a lawsuit lying in the waits.

so my concern lies with the "computer" that matches the plate numbers. I don't see how that is fool proof. This idea blows dogs for quarters.

dogs for quarters. correct.

Plate recognition software is probably pretty good, I dont think thats what we would need to worry about.
I think its completely sun-dried turds.

I can't imagine the memory in the camera.. traffic in England is nothing compared to the volume on our roads.

Yeah, toll fines are considered "civic fines," and not moving violations. The same goes for red light cameras. Cities got tired of the fight so they just changed it to a fine to avoid it. Since they dont apply points or raise insurance that way, people quit fighting them.
The way the law sees it, is that they are ticketing the vehicle and not the driver, that way they dont have to prove who was operating it at the time of the infraction.
Think parking ticket. The vehicle gets the ticket, then the owner is responsible, not he driver.

Let them take their pics. Doesnt matter unless they can trace you down by bike color and helmet design. My plate is tucked up under the rear and i highly doubt they could snag a pic from an above view. You have to be right behind me and close to read it so they can snap all they want, they will be looking for a guy on a red bike... lol
