hi.. and about used bikes

hi everybody,
i am from NW, am new to US and to bikes here, though I had been riding a bike for 8 years back home.
i m looking at buying a 600 class used bike(R6, CBR, 6R or GSX). and there are somethings i aint really sure....
-what r the things i need to be most careful about when buyng a bike
-how messy a deal can i get into if I am not careful? do folks really buy out bikes just after taking a look at the pic,(ebay kinda stuff)..without ever getting into more closer examination?
-how imp is to check the VIN. can you tell me some sites where I can get info for VIN. i know abt carfax and all for cars, but nothing about bikes.
-do ppl normally get an inspection done by a dealer or somebody(like 100 point check for cars and stuff). how imp is that?
- how do i ensure that everything is correct legally?

My questions mite be a bit too open ended , but would aappreciate any help coming my way!

Re: hi.. and about used bikes

welcome, it is best to buy from an individual,, check the cycle trader or go online to www.traderonline.com that would be the safest bet, there are lots to look for when buying,,

scratches anywhere and everywhere, cracks in the frame, leaks, chain life, tire life, MILEAGE, most of these things should be fine but some people will screw you, surf the sites and find something to your liking, then ask questions , opinions from us or the seller,, ask everything you can.

if not carefull you could get a stolen bike,, dont really trust ebay,, or at least i wouldnt.* as far as the VIN check i have no idea about that,* normally you take someone with you that is more familiar with bikes than you to look it over..* just ask one of us, i'm sure someone here would be willing to help you out

Re: hi.. and about used bikes

thanks for the welcome guyz...
motorcyles unlimited definitely looks like a good place at first sight! will take a detailed look as soon as i get some time.
and I m from good ol' India Zapata! been here some months and have realized i cannot live with a cage.
i guess i can probably make out a neat bike, but am not much clued in..yet..into other things..like how to make sure, its clean legally and aint a stolen thing or something. and my biggest problem is exactly that i hardly know anybody with motorcycles around.
will definitely look forward to getting u guyz' advice whenever i come across something to my liking. nice having u guyz around

thanx to solracer for pointing me to this site from H-I..

Re: hi.. and about used bikes

Great..!!!! Lot's of my co-workers are from India (Pune), and we also have a Tech Support & Software Development office there in Pune.

Patrick @ Motorcycles Unlimited is a very reliable mechanic and he can answer all your questions regarding buying/selling a used bike. If i get a used bike it will be from there.

Re: hi.. and about used bikes

me been hearing the same about eximport over and over. no way am i going there.
i would rather deal with motorcycles unlimited guyz. they seem honest kind of people.
and yh, i might just get a gixxer. actually, i m lookin for something thats aint too uncomfy on street(i plan to ride to work), but also something that i can hit track with. so F4i and GSX 600 and 750 is wat i m thinking, followed by 6R. R6 is out, as almost each R6 seems to be having 2nd gear slippage problem once its done 10-15k miles.

and Racer X, i used to ride a Royal Enfield bk in India.(www.royalenfield.com).
Sadly, there hardly are any big bikes in Indian market yet..Its the biggest CC bike u can get in India(comes in 350 and 500 CC models).
about MSF course, me been thinking on and off. i hv been riding for 7-8 years, and me s been a quick enough too, i guess. so dont know how much help the basic course will be. it wont help with my insurance as i ll be taking it from state farm and they dont give MSF discount. only place it seems to be helping me is with getting my road test waived. i already hv a permit, and gettin a licensed person to ride the bike to DMV office, and gettin another to drive a car seems to be a pain in the asss. on the other side, i can do one xtra track day with the same money:-))..so dunno..

and i hv already read out that eval guide.thanks.

Re: hi.. and about used bikes

so who taught you how to ride?

going from a 20hp 350cc , to a 100+ hp sportbike is a HUGE jump.

btw, 90%+ of motorcycle deaths are from people who are self-taught or taught by friends and family.

i would bet the MSF would help you. riding in the US is diff. then india, and state farm gave me and MSF discount when i was w/ them........

Re: hi.. and about used bikes

,, i should have never given u the site link
j/k.

and a 500cc, 23 hp, 350lbs motorcycle aint really that bad for a cruiser. A Sportster 883 makes like 50+ hps at 550lbs. Kinda close CC:hp:weight ratio. and it definitely was a good bike learn with..
but yhh.. these sportbikes r fast, fast. i respect them and know my capabilities and limitations. left a cool R1 deal from some acquaintence cos I just aint ready for that, yet.

about the "90% figure" that i have been seeing around, its incomplete and useless as such. You also need to quote percentage of riders who take MSF course in the first place. Let me explain why I say it is useless. If, for e.g, 90% of riders do not take MSF, then it implies that statistically, probability of dying is SAME whether you take MSF or not. However, if 91% of riders do not take MSF, and only 90% of those dying are non-MSF, that actually means that probability of dying is lower if one does not take MSF!!!
so unless you can tell me what percentage of bikers take MSF, the "90%" figure doesnt help really

Your point anyway is taken and I will give it absolutely serious thought now.
Let me know where can I take this course around. You might just see me in your next class.Thanks.
