SHNF ride 03/14

After a decade or so of not owning a dirt bike I am finally back. Picked up a 2010 CRF450r this last weekend and already love the fuel injection. I also picked up a crf150r for my wife a while back and hopefully she will enjoy dirt biking as much as I do.

My plan is to camp Friday night and then go for a morning ride. It's gonna be kinda short(only 1-2hrs) and slow since this will be my wife's first off roading adventure on two wheels. I would appreciate any suggestions on where to camp and trails. Someone to come along and show me the area will be appreciated.

Anyone interested in coming along?

I'm hopefully going to be out there early Saturday morning.

Gotta be back downtown by 1pm though so I'm hitting it and jetting back into town.

The trails are pretty well marked just watch out for the 2 way traffic and make sure to give oncoming riders a heads up that you have children/new riders behind you so they don't startle/run into them.

If I can make it out there I'll probably be pulling into the Stubblefield Trail Head around 8. I'll be in a blue ram with a kdx in the back if you see me and have any questions just holler at me.

I'm in the same boat as you just picked up my new bike last weekend, took it out to Hidden Falls over the weekend. Had a great time came home with a flat though. I'd love to come out and ride with you this weekend but i've got to find a spark arrestor first, it just has a shorty on it now.

Dave, go to the attachment above and at the bottom left of the home page is some maps of the east and west side trails in the SHNF. OR, you can go to the old dudes on dirt bike web site and under photos scroll down till you find the maps page, we have lots of maps, distances of each trail, etc there.

You can camp at Kelley's pond, has a restroom but not much else except a trail that runs right by it and a little open area for your wife to ride around in to get a feel for her bike before you head out on the trails.

Be aware the trails are closed at present with all the rain we got yesterday and today but hopefully they will reopen before the weekend.

Call before you haul 1-888-361-6908 ext 2 to get trail updates

Larry

We will camp at kellys pond, head off on kellys pond trail and then connect to the woodpecker trail and circle back around. Should be good for a hour or so at my wife's pace.

BEWARE: Woodpecker trail on the west side of the paved road and south of 1375 is the nastiest section in the whole forest, especially since it's rained for 2 days this week. If your wife is inexperienced my suggestion would be ride most of the Honeymoon trail till you get to the clay sections where it will have a little downhill, gets muddy there too. Also might try the Kelley's Pond trail that crosses 1375 to the west side trailhead, that one is usually not too bad after the rains. If you want to do a complete loop, continue on when you get to the trailhead by crossing forest road 208 and get on the woodpecker all the way to Stubblefield road and continue on to 1375, cross it, then 1/4 mile in take the right onto Honeymoon trail and back to Kelley's pond. About a 12 mile loop, and depending on what speed you're going should be 1-2 hours. PM me if you want more info and I'll send you my cell number to talk.

Dave---Tuesday the SHNF trails are CLOSED. Call before you haul 1-888-361-6908 ext 2. They may reopen, but be sure and check before you haul your bikes up there and waste a trip.

Well the rain stuck around longer than I had hoped. If the trails are shut down we may head over to rio bravo and see what that is like.

I will be riding Sunday either at the forest or Rio Bravo. I want to give it an extra day to dry up some.

TRH is having a race at Sterling Ranch on Sunday if you want to ride and can't find a place. Think it will be very muddy too though, but hey, how bad do you want to ride, right?

Rio may be open Saturday. It takes a while to drain and dry up on the lower sections of the big track. There is a number on their Web page to call for information.

I doubt I'll ride on the big track, probably just stick to trails and following the wife around.

The great thing about Rio is that there are no big make it or die trying jumps. You can role anything on the track and still have a good time.

Yeah I'm not the biggest fan of jumps and definitely not a fan of being impaled in the side of a dirt hill.

Last time I was jumping bigger jumps I was practicing preloading and messed up my timing. Essentially endo'ed, over shot the jump and the bike bounced and landed on my shoulder. Not my favorite experience.
