Friend of my sons. Has had the bike for some time now. Was going to sell it and buy a car. Cager turned left in front of him on his way to school. Sad deal and my son is in shock since he has rode with him at times. RIP and prayers to the family for their loss. Was selling so he carry his girlfriend around in a car.

You can see it in some of the other pics and video in the original link. It didn't go far. Unfortunately, you can also see he had his gear Sidi boots, Arai helmet.

Sad deal for sure.

And looking at the vid I'm not convinced he was going that fast. It looks more like the car driver didn't take the time to look well enough. They may never have stoped in the center lane but just rolled it. You can see the cars' momentum carried it into the ditch after front wheel was disabled and the bike never past over the car.

For reasons why the driver didn't see, add to the list Dawn time. It was either dark or with sun begining to rise. And with rider heading west, the changing sky / sun would be at his back and at certain times of the year, like winter, the sun hangs low longer. Also the angle of that road would have put it in line with a more southernly rising sun.

Only mentioning, I belive it helps to think about this kind of stuff, all respects to friends and family. RIP.

Who was at fault makes zero difference when you are dead. Most noobs don't understand going home alive is nobody else's business but your own.

RIP.

Yesterday a Metro bus turned left in front of a van causing a serious accident. If it can happen to a van, it's not hard do understand how it can happen to a rider and bike.

Argh, the reporter in that story... It's like she couldn't care less about the girlfriend or the family. At one point she's checking her phone?!

How much do you have to haul to make a wheel scatter into a bunch of tiny pieces like that? Are they really that fragile?

You beat me to it. I looked at the time of the accident, and the orientation of the driver and rider. This likely was a case of low hanging sun limiting the driver's vision along with the usual factors like not paying enough attention before turning. I know some of you commute, but try to avoid riding at twilight because motorists' vision are impaired.

The kid had 13 years of experience, and he was wearing pricey gear. The left-turning driver is my biggest fear for this very reason since it's the #1 killer of riders and now this young man. You can see the Google Street View of the intersection. Notice how the setting sun obscures everything to the South West.
