Pearland Little Leaguers wonder 'what if' after IL team cheating ruling

The Pearland Little League team left Williamsport, Pennsylvania No. 4 in the country.

But Wednesday morning, the team woke up to news that they are now No. 3 because of a major cheating scandal involving the team from Illinois.

Don Smith is Pearland's manager. "It's a travesty, it really is. And I want to clarify this. It's not on the kids, this is an adult manufactured situation," Smith explained.

Little League International said the Illinois team put players on its team who did not qualify to play because they lived outside of the team's boundaries. Now there are several "what if" questions because the Pearland Little League boys lost to the team from Illinois so Smith said had all of this come to the surface sooner, there could possibly have been a different outcome.

"Our thought processes is, if we got through that game we were loaded back with our top three pitchers that we used from state, regionals and into Williamsport, so of course we're sitting there saying "what if'."

Little League officials say the Illinois team expanded its boundaries beyond what regulation allowed to bring in better players who should not have been on the team. The Illinois team is not the Little League World Series champs and a team from Las Vegas will take that spot.
