Just another option

http://www.adorama.com/NK6004AF2U.html

even tripods can get expensive, like 1K expensive, and then another 300-700 for a head to put on it. WTF.

hey chris, if you want to save some money consider the f-stop at 4 instead of 2.8. like here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I1X3W8/...m&linkCode=as1

you still get that "L" badge and still keep the Image Stabilization. However if you choose to save a bunch of money go with the L lens without the IS: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000053HH5/...m&linkCode=as1

just trying to give you other options.

Nice lens Chris, I'm sure you'll love it. No way I could shoot 200mm+ without IS. (VR on Nikon's)

I might have to rent a Nikon 70-200/f2.8 to compare to what I'm using now and see if I can tell the difference. Or maybe I shouldn't, thats a lot of cash I'll end up dropping afterwards. :laughing6

I have the 18-200 and its a GREAT all around lens. 40x vs 80 is a more personal matter, I'd have her try holding both and see if she has a preference for the ergos. That 40x is tiny. :laughing6 . If it were me I'd go with the 80 but they are both good cameras. I'm just turned off by the lack of autofocus motor in the 40 bodies. But that might not be an issue for you, depending on what you plan to do with it.

i am very new to the photo world compare to most of the guys on this board. but i guess ill try to give you my opinion. with the lenses, i would wait to see what see needs. she may never need the 200 range. Get a camera and take pictures. If she sees that she needs the extra range then for for it. get like a 70-200 for nikon or watever range. Trying to cover all the range in one lens is great for its convience, but the images are usually subpar to the other lenses. Take for example a prime lens at 50mm can produce good pictures compare to some of the tele lenses in the same range, however you lose the telescoping function, but in the good side it makes the photographer "frame" the picture in their head besides depending on the telescoping for the framing. So in my opinion use the kit lenses and learn on them. If they didn't come with kit lenses they can be had for cheap on ebay, which later when you outgrow the lenses you can ebay it back for lil loss. Think photography equipment as bikes. You can buy a liter or a 250, but in the end skills prevails the equipment. On the camera body its the same thing, pick a camera where she feels comfortable with holding it and make sure of course you like the features (iso setting, megapixel, etc) This is just my view, theres alot more qualified professional that can comment on http://www.fredmiranda.com/

I havent heard much good about the 40, but Ill say this, its more about the lens and knowledge of the photog than the body.
