Gilmer tops West Orange-Stark for 4A D-II title

Blake Lynch scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and Gilmer overcame an 18-point deficit to beat West Orange-Stark 35-25 for the Class 4A Division II state championship Friday.

Gilmer (16-0) won its third state title, all in the last 11 years. West Orange-Stark is now 2-3 in state championship games after opening the postseason with a 64-0 victory against Houston Scarborough, believed to be the first 0-10 team to make the Texas playoffs.

West Orange-Stark (13-3) had three turnovers in the second half. The first two led to touchdowns that started Gilmer's 28-point second-half surge.

Lynch, who has committed to play at Baylor, ran 4 yards to give Gilmer its first lead with 10:53 to play. He scored from 7 yards out with 4:59 remaining. Lynch finished with 21 rushing yards on five carries, and caught two passes for 96 yards.

West Orange-Stark was in Gilmer territory early in the third quarter when Jackson Sikes intercepted a pass from Jack Dallas, leading to McLane Carter's 19-yard scoring pass to Nick Smith.

On the play after the kickoff, Gilmer's Demarco Boyd knocked the ball loose from Trey Baldwin, and Devin Smith recovered in the end zone to pull Gilmer within 25-21.

Carter completed 13 of 21 passes for 239 yards. Kris Boyd ran for a game-high 84 yards and a touchdown. Held to 112 first-half yards, Gilmer broke loose for 243 in the second half.

West Orange-Stark took a 25-7 lead on Trey Baldwin's 1-yard touchdown run with 24 seconds left in the second quarter.

Dallas ran 12 yards for West Orange-Stark's first-quarter touchdown, and threw scoring passes to Jeron Preston and Deionte Thompson in the second. Dallas had 193 yards passing and 17 rushing.

Gilmer finished with 950 points, the second-highest total in Texas history. Gilmer's point total (35) was its lowest of the season, and the highest allowed by West Orange-Stark.
