I have an 02 and it started acting up a year ago, took it to the shop. It was the fuel pump and had to have the carbs cleaned and synced. Even if you hear the pump run when you first turn the key on doesn't mean it's working properly

I had back firing and just generally running shitty, I tried a lot of stuff myself as far as spark plugs, wires, new ecu and it ended up being something simple.

Hmmm. Bike is carbureted. Check your hoses. Make sure nothing is pinched.

if the bike is rideable to 45/louetta, House of paint designs can take a look at it. They have always given me affordable pricing. Check em out.

I'm going to take a swing and say that is your problem. There is some water/ethanol in the tank/carbs. drain the carbs (via the valve located at bottom of bowl) and put in new gas from a busy gas station. drain the carbs again. Never hurts to change plugs either. Although you might have to get the carb taken apart and cleaned to get it all out.

You may have picked up some water in the fuel.
Try running some Siloo and Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner through it
