I built a new camera mount (video)

I mounted my wife's camera out on the right frame slider. Made for an interesting view, but the camera kept powering down at 1:30. Maybe vibration? I was headed for the freeway when I looked down and noticed it was off, so I headed back to the house. Any ideas?

What kind of camera is it? Post some info on the camera, I have one that powers down after 1:30 of inactivity to save battery life.

Its a Sony DSC S600. My wife takes video longer than 1.30 but it keeps right on trucking, and she's holding it.

Do me a favor, ask her if she was zooming in or anything. Also try setting it on your desk and pressing record and see if it goes past 1:30 with no interaction. It may be vibration also as that is not exactly designed to be used in that manner and the electronics may be breaking down. What size memory card do you have and is your battery new and fully charged? Sorry for all the questions but to diagnose the problem for a good solution I need to know everything. Do you have any vibration isolation or dampeners on your mount?

Powersave on that camera is after 3 mins anyway, so that can't be the problem.

One more request, can you take a picture of the way the battery mounts? If there is some space in the bay it my be losing contact and turning off because of that.

My video camera had difficulty maintaining record if it was zoomed in at all, while mounted on a bike. I think the vibration affected the lenses more if they were in a zoomed position. Somehow that seemed to cause the camera to shutdown.
However with it set at full wide then it would work fine.

Standard Zoom, full wide. It went right by 130 on my desk, but then I picked it up and started tapping on the top, and it powered off without pulling the lens back in - kind of like if you had pulled the batteries straight out. The card is 512mb, and the batteries were/are new.

The camera takes two AA's mounted sideways on the right side of the camera. I'm going to fit a piece of paper between the battery and the case for an interference fit, just to see if that helps. I may also try and add some dampening to the mount.

That sounds like the problem to me personally... Hopefully that fixes it.

that is a cool camera angle...it's extremely steady of a mount too, i was expecting to see a bouncing video...those roads didn't look like they were the smoothest...can you snap a shot of your mounting system?

You should be more worried about stopping at stop signs.

I agree - I don't generally roll through stopsigns.

I build things on the cheap! The mount consists of a flat piece of steel attached to the slider with a radiator hose clamp. The camera was attached to the steel with a 1/4" bolt. The whole thing was real stable, but I did have the camera tied to the bike incase the whole thing fell off. I was surprised that it worked as well as it did.

I'm going to add a piece of thick rubber between the steel plate and the camera to see if I can dampen some of the vibrations.

Britt

I can't really tell (might just be my eyes) but is the camera focusing on what's ahead of it or on the front of your bike? Might want to see if turning it just a tad to keep the bike in the very edge of view helps with focus.

If none of that works you may need to open you camera (not recommended, voids warranty) and see what loose boards are on the inside and maybe secure them with a dab of hot glue.

Hope some of my suggestions help you!
