Video Alpinestars demonstrate TechAir airbag system with crash test

Slow motion footage shows airbag inflates before rider makes contact with vehicle

ALPINESTARS has released a video showing its Tech-Air street airbag system undergoing crash testing.

The demonstration, shot at a crash test research facility in Milan, Italy, shows a crash test dummy wearing the Tech-air System T-boning an old Mercedes saloon whilst riding a BMW R1200 GS.

The bike strikes the car at 48kph (29.8mph) at which point the system detects the impact and deploys the airbag, all within 59 milliseconds. Full inflation of the airbag took 25 milliseconds.

Slow motion footage shows the airbag inflates before the rider makes contact with the vehicle.

Alpinestars say: 'Tech-Air™ is the world’s first self-contained airbag system that independently functions without the need for sensors to be installed on the bike and the subsequent need to link a specific motorcycle to the Tech-Air™ street airbag system used by the rider. This means that Tech-Air™ offers the freedom to ride any bike on any surface at any time.

'Offering instantaneous, high-pressure inflatable protection the Tech-Air™ street airbag system gives the rider comprehensive protection in a crash by covering the full back, shoulders, kidney areas and chest.'

The system is housed within the Alpinestars jacket and will be available for purchase in Spring 2015 - no word on price yet.
