crf100 gearing questions

Hey guys,

What sprocket sizes do you guys use for the Katy track? Also, I have an aluminum sprocket that I need to change out but have the original stock steel one.

Does the weight vs. an aluminum make THAT much of a difference?

Thanks!

I've used 15/49 and 16/49, I preferred the 16 front but have raced the last few rounds with the 15, just been too lazy to change it. There are a couple other threads, from more experienced racers, about this on here if you use the search up top..

You plan on making out to the races next wknd? We rode together for a group practice earlier this year.

Yeah, I dont have any input on gearing for the bigger wheels. We run smaller wheel size so end up running higher gearing to compensate.

Ashley, good to see ya out at the last Denton races. Hows the bike running? Need anything before Katy?

See yall out there.

Is there any advantage of aluminum vs. steel sprocket?

I don't race but I go to the track every Friday right after work. I'm assuming you guys will be practicing that Friday before race day? If so, I'll see you guys there.

What gearing do you run with the smaller wheels?

obed, jason or steven can help you on gearing for the bigger wheels.. hopefully they will see the thread and chime in

There is a weight difference, if you will notice it idk. On a big bike the aluminum sprocket will wear out quicker but you wont have to worry about that as much on a mini. Quick search comparing the weight of a 48t steel sprocket and 48t aluminum sprocket

Steel - 1.8 lbs
Aluminum - 1.1 lbs

What size wheel, on my 16 I had 15/48. If you aren't in a mad rush, I will be in town in 2 weeks and I will give you my old 48.

I run 15/45 on 17" wheels and just use 3rd-5th gear at Katy. A 46 rear is probably ideal, but I went down one more tooth for endurance. Never really noticed the weight difference between steel and aluminum on the bike.

I went to practice early last Sunday and got in a couple of runs before the karts were out in force. Packed it up early since I was the only bike there.

i have 16's. do i need to change my chain and front with the sprocket altogether? do these things wear down like street bikes?

can i buy one of those cheap ebay kits for 40 that includes everything or should i avoid that and go for the name brand stuff?

You should change your chain and sprockets at the same time, and if you're thinking about doing that you can think about switching to the crf/xr80 chain and sprocket combo. It's a way to save some weight if that's what you're trying to do.

I would like to say I would be there to roll around the track with ya, but I probably wont be there. Too busy at work with the weather.
