I stay off the shoulder for sure. Way to much debris... nails, screws, metal, tires, furniture, ladders, transients....

Are we talking splitting, or riding the shoulder? Cause riding the shoulder.

There's only one place where I hit the shoulder for a brief period of time.

It's to go around a line of car's in the far lane and cut back in on the exit ramp. I try to ride it for as little distance as possible for reasons mentioned above. Usually only ends up being about 20 ft depending on how heavy traffic is.

Splitting is definitely better than the shoulder.

With the construction going on i45, I'll take the shoulder when they make all traffic exit or consolidate to one lane. Mind you its at an idle dodging the ridiculous amounts of debris.

Only done it a few times, now I avoid the whole interstate, which makes for a better ride anyway.

The only negative I've had to deal with was some upstanding productive member of society in a black smoke belching diesel dodge, that smoked out half the county when he saw me coming down the shoulder. To be fair it was the most impressive display of "rolling coal" I've seen all year.

I ride the shoulder on 249 north of Spring Cypress if it's rush hour. It's about 50 ft wide and I creep along at about 15-20 mph to bypass the 2 miles of parking lot before the Northpoint light. I feel safer on the shoulder when it's that wide than splitting lanes for some reason. I got pinched between a Ford Ranger and an 18-wheeler the other day splitting there, so I've just stuck to the shoulder.

well your 50' of pavement available is wide enough for cars too. The point of splitting is to utilize marked pavement space without impeding traffic. When I see guys like yourself and those that ride on sidewalks (unless it's a motard, lol) it just makes me smh.

Right, I can fit an 18 wheeler on the shoulder, they can fit so why shouldn't they "split" the shoulder.

Nut up and truly split or suck it up and stay in traffic

i use 1 shoulder every day in the same spot, same shoulder on the way to work in the morning. its the ramp from 225 west to 610 because people cant merge and traffic backs up for at least 3/4 a mile before the ramp. i'm much more comfortable lane splitting though.

I ride the shoulder on a few parts on 59 south during rush hour. But i mostly try to stay off it for all of the junk and bumps.
