Sugarland PD Blocking Lane on Traffic Stops

What gives? I've seen it once, and my girlfriend has seen it twice. Sugarland PD SUV will have two tires over the line and in the right lane on traffic stops. They completely take away the option of slowing down to 20-under. You either have to change lanes or come to a complete stop on the freeway. This is on traffic stops with a shoulder a car and a half wide.

This isn't a LEO bash. This is truly trying to understand WTF they are thinking. They are taking away the legal option of slowing down, forcing drivers to change lanes (which may not be possible depending on the idiots in the neighboring lane), and are creating an extremely unsafe situation for themselves if someone thinks they can squeeze by and clips the back of their unit. They're practically setting themselves up to be creamed by their own vehicle.

I've seen Harris County doing the same

Up here on 2920 (east of Tomball), I've seen them do the same during rush hour. So, it's not just limited to Sugarland.

It is because it keeps the police vehicle from being directly behind the suspect/violator vehicle in the event of a rear end collision, and provides more protection for the occupant of the violator vehicle and cover for the officer in the event of a rear end collision.

...> Think of it as a firetruck blocking lanes for a shoulder accident. Same principle. officer and victim safety....

I try to move over to the next lane even if the LEO doesn't do that. At the very least, treat them no worse than road construction workers. I don't envy them having to put their lives on the line on the side of busy hwys with cars blowing by only inches away.

Why not continue the stop to the next exit and conduct it on a side street of business? I see commercial enforcement do it all the time. Why disrupt the freeway, when there are better alternatives?

Remember, most drivers are idiots and too stupid to follow directions. I'm sure the cops are just happy they managed to pull over without destroying their own vehicle or someone else's.

Are you implying that commercial drivers aren't idiots too? They seem to get the concept.

Maybe I didn't explain it right. The way SLPD is doing it, it is MORE dangerous. They're still mostly behind the violator vehicle with their hanging out in traffic.

You should be a cop... you'd discover how easy it would be for you to do things 100 times better, just given the chance.

But but but I don't wanna!

On a serious note, I'm was just talking about freeway stops. I'm not a cop but I could see that the slight change in protocol could drastically prevent accidents and not impede the flow of traffic. Can you tell me what's wrong with my logic?

A few months ago I was leaving the island and got pulled over doing 85 in a 60. I signaled to move over to the right side and proceeded to exit the freeway after the big bridge, found a good place to pull over and turned off the car. Galveston Sheriff deputy gave me a warning and told me to slow down. Dont know if it was because he didnt feel like giving me a ticket or the fact that I actually got both of us into a safe area or what. But I know I got a warning on what would have been a huge ticket.
