Crashes double after red light cameras pulled

Auto crashes more than doubled at busy Houston intersections after red light cameras were pulled from those areas, according to figures released by the Houston Police Department.

The controversial network of cameras installed at 50 high-risk intersections was taken down after it was defeated in a November 2010 referendum, halting an estimated $10 million in annual revenue to HPD. After the vote, the city filed a lawsuit against American Traffic Solutions, based in Arizona, to settle a breach of the camera contract, and eventually agreed to reimburse ATS $4.8 million for early termination.

Supporters of the camera system expressed concern that accidents at the once-monitored intersections would increase without the cameras, and HPD statistics show an increase of 117 percent over the last four years. While the cameras were in operation from 2006-2010, HPD reported 4,100 crashes at those intersections followed by almost 9,000 crashes during the next four years without camera, including a 30 percent increase in fatal collisions.

However, HPD's data did not show traffic counts over time at the monitored intersections.

The traffic numbers were part of an HPD staff presentation to the city council's Public Safety Committee Tuesday morning. HPD is also proposing a "Strategic Growth Plan" that over the next five years would require a projected $105 million to pay the salaries and equipment of 540 additional officers.

I had thought that the whole problem was that data showed accidents went up after the cameras went in initially...

How about they do a study on how many blown out tires, bent rims, busted suspensions from all the 2 feet deep pot holes in this ! Fixing them doesn't generate any revenue for them.

Yeah I always understood the progression to be

red light cameras > less enforcement > traffic lights without cameras are less safe

So when you take away all of the cameras the effects don't instantly revert.

In that same period the number of illegals driving on Houston (Texas) roadways also increased.

I doubt that. The Great Recession sent a lot of them back across the border. Like a kitchen running out of food, the roaches tend to disperse as well. The numbers of day laborers in front of the usual spots (Home Depot, etc.) are still no where near what I remember seeing during the last housing boom.

With the recovery and housing market getting stronger, they'll no doubt return.

As for the redlight cams. Even though I got a ticket and paid it, I'm for their reinstatement. Don't want a ticket? Don't run RLs.

Anyone who wants the cameras back should have their kicked.

I got one for not coming to a complete stop turning right on westheimer and 610. Had to watch the video miltiple times to see where my rear tire had not yet crossed the white line before it turned. Im confident I would have been rear ended if Id have stopped.

It was such a bs ticket, they charged less than half of what a normal ticket would be just so you shut up and pay. I saw a thing on the news where they got 75,000 people in one month for the same thing at the one intersection. There was a huge dispute.
Dont think for one second that its about safety and not 100% about revenue

So what if it is about generating revenue?

If in one yr it saves one minvan full of kids and mom being slaughtered by a duelly in a hurry, and pump millions into the city revenue stream so there is less pressure to raise property tax, and frees up cops to do other law enforcement... that's a win win win in my book.

The vast majority of drivers getting popped are guilty as sin. Don't think this is about freedom and not about avoiding getting caught breaking the law.
