Wet and Nasty SHNF ride Saturday!

Got to the trails right after a good shower had passed thru on Saturday morning. 4 of us old dudes and new guy from Houston and 2 guys from Austin all rode the east side. Very wet, slippery, slippery roots, slick clay, deep water holes, wet branches, but no dust so all was good. Had 4 or 5 crashes but no injuries so alls well there too, just too slick.

Asking a noob question, but curious. Why was he going down so much? Wrong tires?

Maxgs, it had just rained before we rode that morning, everything out there was wet, slippery, water holes, wet exposed roots, and just plain nasty. The guys from Austin hadn't ridden the forest except once before, also they had new good DOT approved tires for rocks on their bikes. All this made it very difficult for them, it was difficult for me and I've been riding there 35 years. We took them on a 22 mile ride in nasty conditions which would have felt like taking a noob on a 500 ride on the street up and down 3090 or the hill country for the first time in the rain. They made it out alive so all's good....

I am surprised the trails were opened. They usually close them on days like that to prevent the extra erosion.

You're right ileono918, in the past they would close the trails with just about any amount of rain, but hopefully the times are changing. They have done studies and moved trails so the erosions are starting to not be as much an issue as it was in the past. There are still areas out there that need attention, but have gotten much better with trail managment and maintanence. Forestry service also needs help maintaning the trails and found out they get more volunteers when they leave them open than when they are closed all the time. They do not have the personel anymore to maintain the trails so it is very improtant to have these volunteers. Our group, ODODB, along with TRH has taken on the task of clearing the multiuse trails and maintaining them so they are safer to ride for everyone. It's a very big task, but if we as riders don't do it, it could eventually close the forest to dirt riding and other activities.

Looks like fun! I'm sure I will out there more now that it has cooled off a bit. I love the sandy sections out there after a little rain. Looks like there was more than a little out there though.

Well hotnanas, balloon loop is preped for you right now. Better take advantage of hMother Natures work cause in a month or so, we're going out to fix her handy work for the little kids to ride too and it will have a whole lot less to get over when we're through.

OH yeah, and if you really like the way Mother nature fixes the trails, venture over to the BIG LOOP on the west side, yes the ones that's closed, and you will see what happens after a couple of years of no maintanence, I'll bet even you won't venture in there very far without cussin'...been there and it's no fun at all.

...i was talking about dropping the water down ontop of the sand...not the grooming of her face slappers. As always, big thanks to those guys who trim that back.

The TRH Ocho Loco race should be awesome (if not cancelled). We ran the arrows backwards.

Saw your video, looked like the Fern part you rode was in great shape. Be glad you guys didn't ride up YCC and Zebra, lots of standing water on those trails Saturday, but NW and Boy Scout were in great shape too, and for once I liked riding Sandy with the sand packed down, although one of our guys went down twice in that little section of clay. Love the forest when the sand is packed.....

Shoot me a PM whenever you ride Saturdays and looking for someone to tag along. It is the only day I can get out there.

PM'ed you with info. I'm maintanencing my bike this Saturday cause it needs it badly before I ride again, but may have some of our guys going out. Some are trying to go to Brazos Valley up near College Station on Saturday if it's open. Lot's of hills there to climb and creek trails, etc.
