Question for military personnel...

Can someone please explain what it means when a soldier receives his Combat patch/badge? I have a friend stationed right outside Baghdad and he just received his combat patch/badge. I was told they get this when they are "under fire", can someone elaborate for me?

if you go to war - you will more than likely get one. My ex got one after he came home from iraq.

Not everyone gets one, As far as the requirements for the marines you have to be under hostile fire and then return fire. but there are a few exceptions like if you get hit with an IED.

Basically the majority of the military with a Combat Action Ribbon/Patch has been in a combat situation not just stationed over in Iraq.

I don't know about Iraq, but in Viet Nam, the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB) went to someone serving for 30 days as an infantryman and coming under fire at least once. Tankers and artillerymen were not eligible nor were clerks, cooks, helicopter crewmen even though they were often shot at.

My friend is in the infantry. Cavalry Scout I believe, and he has been there for a little over a month but he just got it this week. His platoon has been fired on and received a few casualties (by IED). They said the bridge they use to receive mail and supplies was blown up. So that leads me to believe he is NOT in friendly territory. (slight sarcasm there)

so what exactly does this patch/badge mean? Is it some sort of recognition or achievement? Or is it like a "Now I get to shoot back at your " badge?
