New Ferrari motorcycle coming

Italian marque submits patent application for vtwin engine

New Ferrari motorcycle coming

FERRARI has submitted a patent application for a v-twin engine, suggesting the Italian marque could be exploring the possibility of a motorcycle.

The patent is for the design of an ‘Internal combustion engine with ‘V’ configuration of the cylinders’ and shows the motor placed inside a sketch of a generic motorcycle.

The document sees Italian inventor Favaretto Fabrizio describe how the engine design negates any need for balancing shafts by adding ‘balancing masses’ to the crankshaft, which in turn reduces weight and reciprocating inertial forces.

Ferrari has also submitted a trademark application for the name ‘Cavallino’ - Italian for pony - with the document marking the name out for use on a vehicle. The firm wouldn’t comment on the patent applications or trademarks so it’s unclear if the name is in anyway related to the v-twin project.

There has only ever been one ‘official’ Ferrari motorcycle, an aluminium-bodied 105hp 900cc inline-four built by David Kay Engineering, who was granted permission from Piero Ferrari to use the Ferrari badge on his motorcycle.

It was eventually sold at auction in 2012 for £85,000 after failing to sell on eBay for £250,000.
