I picked up a nearly new looking sony hi-8 from a shop for $70 works great. Even the new ones arent that expensive... Dont know if they sell a tape that will clean the heads like they do for vcr's i think i would go that route if that doesnt work get a new one or new to you.

get a Q-tip and some alcohol and gently rub the head, if it is really dirty you can even see the dirt on the Qtip, if your head itches and is red then you need to go to the dr. cause you stuck it somewhere you should not have.

go a head and wipe all the little rollers and what ever else the tape comes in contact with, I have done it with VCR's using the long Q-tips and all that stuff gets dirty.

Jeez, VCR, I have not used one of those in a long time.
