Guy won't transfer the bike!!!

I sold the bike to this young douche in March and made the mistake of not dragging him to DPS w me. well a few months passed and he still hasn't transferred the bike over to him.

I don't want any blame of this douchery. I do have the signed sales receipt and top of the title. I should've kept the plates but figured he needed those to ride home. Anyways, what are my options here?

Simple fix. There is a form you send to the DPS that shows you sold the bike and are no longer the registered owner. Download, fill out (put his info on it as well) and send it in. Then don't worry anymore, not your problem.

This. There is no reason to drag anyone anywhere when selling.

I never transfer bikes in my name until it's until time to register them. It's your responsibility to protect yourself not his. Send that top part of the title in, with what?, $10?

Yup. it kinda sucks as a buyer cause you want to ride... but you know you shouldn't. I wouldn't fault anyone for keeping plates, despite that i have ZERO intention of harm or causing trouble.

With that said... this is why they have that form everyone has talked about.

Keeping your plates only means new owner won't get to use the rest of your paid registration. It has nothing to do with who still owns the title.

Unless it's a vanity plate, I always give the new owner my plates. Depending on how much registration I have left on the bike, I can use it as a selling point, as he will not need to buy new plate ($12?) and can use the remainder of my paid yearly registration fee (typically $64).

Even without your plate, if the vehicle is involved in a crime, the OWNER (person vehicle is Titled to) might possibly still be liable.

Real protection comes with submitting the Vehicle Transfer Notification, and you can do it online via the links mentioned above.

Without a change, you can be held liable as the owner.

They have a new penalty that they add to your registration if your paperwork is dated over 30 days. Before they would not really enforce the penalty. I had to pay the extra fee. The longer you wait the more it adds up.

And you are absolutely right. But like the NJ rider that got stuff in two trash bags in Mexico... if the unlikely ever happen to you, you are gonna wish you hadn't played the lousy luck lottery.

It only takes 10mins to fill out that form online.
