I believe that in less than 5 years you will be unable to remove the cats on a streetbike, no more full systems on street bikes, it will be slip ons only.
It won't affect the sportbike crowd much, but it will really impact the cruiser market.

I'd like to see a return to more versatile motorcycles, instead of building a very narrowly focused bike so that it does well for the magazines track test review.

I'm not talking about less performance, just less narrowly focused;
Broader, slightly higher bars, which will make the bike steer lighter.
Better seats and lower pegs that are more comfortable than for 30 minutes at a time.
Let's face it, on the street ground clearance isn't much of an issue, and if you're serious about doing track time, you'll end up with rearsets anyway.

Cam timing and engine tuning more biased towards midrange, not R6 gutless. (no offense to R6 owners)

However, I've been around bikes too long to realize that this probably won't happen, at least not in the U.S., anytime soon.
And dont forget electric bikes mght see a popularity surge.

Also, your argument wasn't that they couldn't but that they didn't out of some ulterior motive to make more money.
For example, if HRC parts were readily available, than that might be true, but unfortunately they're not.
Manuf. dont employ chemist only engineers, therefore they cant come up with those compounds. Let me explain to you how it works. Researcher needs a harder/stronger/lighter material for an experiment/test/spectros/etc, they work out a synthesis, come up with a compound, publish it (in order to recieve extra grant money), manuf. read about it and incorperate it. They cant come up with the materials period.
