Small standards and small cruisers also make great starter bikes. There are less things to replace if you drop it. Also, the low center of gravity and low seat height of cruisers make them easy to handle in the parking lot.

I started on a 1995 Honda Nighthawk 750, then upgraded to a 2000 Shadow Sabre 1100. A Honda Shadow 600 or 750 or Yamaha VStar 650 would make a good starter bike. Don't be afraid of the engine size. A V-twin 600/750 is nothing like an inline 4 600/750.
