Tire issue- ddx and tx

Hey guys. So I go to drop off the Duc for service the other day at HSB, and just happened to notice this nasty-looking cut in the rear tire. Just got back from a trip to Arkansas, about 900 miles round trip, so it could've happened literally anywhere. All paved roads, though the place I was staying required some maneuvering in grass/gravel to park...I've ridden it the whole week since, and haven't noticed a thing. Haven't checked the pressure since before the trip, though. The tire is a Michelin Pilot Road 3, only has about 2K miles on it.

So I have 2 questions at this point.

1. What's the most likely cause? I've never seen a tear like this before, not since my tire was slashed sitting outside the movie theater that one time, anyway.

2. How bad is it? The tire's not that old, and still has plenty of tread left, so I'd rather not replace it if I could get away with it. Is there some kind of plug/patch or something I should have a tire place put on it? Just to sure it up, you know? Or should I just leave it be and not worry about it?

Pic is attached. Can't tell scale very well. The cut looked to be about 1 inch long, right in the middle of the tread.

There is no patch or plug for that. I really don't think the rubber is part of the integrity of the tire. I'm pretty sure it's all in the belting. Can you tell if any cords are cut ?

Might be covered

Yeah, I can see cords too. Also just remembered I bought either a 2 or 5 year tire and wheel- road hazard protection plan when I bought the bike. And by some miracle I actually kept the contract. Looks like as long as the tread is good it should cover something like this, right? I'll try to go down that route when it gets out of the shop. Anybody know if Houston Superbikes sells tires? That'd be really convenient.
