ninja 250 shift prob

hey everyone
recently im having problems with my shifter, when im on second gear sometimes it drops the gear to 'N', now it happens very often. shifting isn't smooth like before. what should i do?

Since it's a 2012, do you still have warranty? Trans issues would be good for the dealer to resolve.

try removing the shifter from it's pivot dowel and cleaning the assembly. they sometimes get rusty, crusty and cruddy and don't want to allow the shifter to pivot fully and smoothly. 1st gear to 2nd gear requires the longest throw of the shifter and is the most likely gear change for this problem to materialize. It's free and doesn't require anything but time, a little sand paper and some grease. the bolt that holds the shifter on to the peg assembly has red loctite on it from the factory. you have to heat the bolt to soften the thread locker or you will strip the head of the bolt. be sure to pay attention to the location of the shift lever and replace it in the same position. proper adjustment of the shifter is crucial.
