Bike import from Japan?

Anybody here have any luck importing a bike from outside the U.S.? I think the bike is old enough to avoid EPA hassles. Title and other costs are to be addressed later right now import is the main concern. Solid info appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I don't follow, really title, EPA, DOT and costs (import taxes) are the only issues to be concerned with. You can pay anybody to ship it here quickly by air cargo or slower by ocean shipment. The problems is getting it through customs and into your possession. Much of the documentation needs to be completed on the other side so if it comes here without proper papers it will sit and sit waiting and incurring storage charges at the bonded warehouse.

Thanks for the help. So far it looks like about $1000.00 from Japan to L.A. EPA should be easy. Import taxes, etc. Another $600.00 to get it from California to IL. Tags and title for a twenty-two year old bike will be easy in Il. All told it doesn't really look like its going to happen no matter how cool it would be to have a Bimota YB7.

Nope, not enough for a V.I.N. but Illinois is kind of lenient if the bike is very old. Have had a bunch of FZR400's and thought this would be a keeper. Wife says I should just ride it home but I have known for years that she would like to take myself and all my stuff and sink the whole shebang in the ocean.

Grey market bikes are tricky. Laws have gotten stricter over the years.
I looked into titling a Japanese bike I bought off someone and it ended up being a dead end road. If you get caught on the road with it, they'll confiscate it and you'll never see it again.

Why not buy a 250Ninja and find out what you are made of instead of spending thousands on a bike that you don't know?

I think a Bimota YB7 for $4000.00 might be cooler than an FZR400 for the same money. I don't really understand the 250 Ninja comment.
