Woman killed in freeway crash

By Scott E. Williams
The Daily News

Published June 5, 2005

BAYOU VISTA — State troopers Saturday were investigating a crash on the shoulder of Interstate 45 that killed a La Porte woman.

Kimberly D. McKinley, 22, was part of a group of motorcyclists headed towards Galveston when she pulled over onto the left shoulder of the freeway’s southbound lane. She was just south of the Texas City Wye near the Bayou Vista city limits.

Officials at the scene said they believed she had gotten ahead of her husband and other members of the traveling group and was waiting for them to catch up.

Minutes after she stopped, about 11:30 a.m., a southbound pickup truck veered onto the shoulder and hit her. She was thrown from the motorcycle and killed instantly, officials said.

Investigators said they believed heavy freeway traffic merging with traffic coming off state highways 3 and 146 caused the truck to veer off of the road.

Officials closed two southbound lanes of traffic on the freeway, while troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the crash. The closures created a traffic backlog that spanned about a half-mile.

No charges had been filed in the case as of Saturday. Investigators said charges or citations stemming from the crash were possible.

That is very sad but why did she get so far ahead of the group? I-45 is not a good place to just pull it over and wait. I would have just rode slower until the group caught up.

RIP
