It is not only the gas mileage that attracts buyers. A lot of people also like it for its small size and being able to fit into tight parking spots. The car is definitely a metro car. It also has outstanding safety aspects. I heard that the cage is working awesome and protects really well.

Some people may buy it just to be different. It definitely has a targetmarket. From edmunds:

"Smart was conceived in the 1990s by Mercedes-Benz in Europe as a vehicle to draw young, hip, urban drivers into Mercedes. It also was an experiment in how to manufacture and retail cars in an innovative manner. (Does Saturn ring a bell?)

In the beginning, in fact, the Swatch watch company was a partner in the venture, which generated the idea to sell the Smart cars in displays like Swatch watches are sold. Indeed, some Smart dealerships in Europe are glass towers that display the colorful Smarts on various levels, like watches."

I've wanted one of those for over two years. At the time they weren't available here so I swapped my truck for a Honda Civic. I immediately started saving about $275/mo on gas. I'd take 68mpg from a smart over my Civic any day, but it depends on how much they end up costing.

Is that currently in production? It is a cool looking car but i thought it wasn't going to be made.

This one too...wonder if the gas mileage is better than the corolla...best in class gas mileage (even better than a Yaris)

Great cars! They park them perpendicular to the curb in Rome.
