Figure of speech. It's even in quotes. I guess that if you didn't pick it up - maybe I should bring down the intellect level a notch or two. TMAW-GMAW isn't the point.
To be clear as beer - The meaning is, get him (welder dood) to care about his work because he understands his work is on the line now when it comes to safety, and you're wary.
But, Mr. Wave - I think we both said basically the same thing. If the weld isn't trustworty for whatever reason, even if it just freaks you to be riding on it - time for a Kaw. I just got a 2010 ZX10 Friday. Smoooooooth....
TMAW?? With no Gas? or GTAW? What wire do you recommend?

LOL

Grind a bevel prep and get a good welder, If you lived near me I would weld it here at my shop.

I wonder why no one has said to PMI the frame to check the alloy? lol

Did I miss a post about the bike being laid down, or wrecked at one point?? Or the weld just broke?

He'll have to drop the engine out of the frame to weld the inside? Might as well get a new frame.

Because pulling an engine is the hardest thing ever? If the factory would replace it, then yeah, no reason not to. Otherwise, too much trouble to deal with titling another frame when there are obviously resources available to have it arguably better than new.

Weld just broke. Common issue with that year FZ1, I'd guess they had an issue with either programming (if robotic) or procedure on the assembly line, because this exact weld has been a problem on lots of frames from that year, many cracking after only a few thousand miles of normal riding.

We know it's cast alum, we know who made it. Don't need PMI just Google. Did you just get a Level 1 MT Cert or something?

I've been Inspecting 20 years and welded for 10, anytime you have to remove a defective weld or have to weld to previously welded material a PT will help to find any surface defect in the base metal if any and will help insure you removed all the old weld. Doesn't have to be done, I was just saying what I would do.Like I said I can't make a call from the pic( maybe you can), I would have to see it to Inspect it. I guess I can't make the call from my office like you can.

I didn't say skip a prep pt. I said go ahead and grind. Pt after the grind is needed. That's why you aren't as good from the office as I am.

You're good Bro, My favorite kind of 3rd party to deal with. Just bring the package to your office and you'll sign anything! I would PT the weld before hand just to be sure it was a crack since I can't really see it well enough to make that call from my office.

Let's just call it lack of fusion if that makes you feel better. Now grind that out! I don't sign I don't see done btw. Im mostly beyond work at this point so you know. I'm not 3rd party Either. I plan and over see now. Btw I was also a welder at one point for kbr. I might direct a field hand to pt it up front and tell me how much it bleeds. My own at my own house would just get a grinder to it. The nde is just to prove your actions. I can clearly see in the pic that it's no bueno.

BTW what inspection cert/certs do you hold? If you dont mind me asking

I never really liked doing RTs but at the time there was any opening in my shop and I was trying to move up so I did it. I got away from it as soon as I could. My card expired in 07 but I stopped using it around 04. I hated going home smelling like those chemicals everyday! Do you ever notice how alot of old RT hands have bad teeth? I always thought it was from being in that box breathing that all day. It can't be good for you.

I think the real question here is what the cost will be for replacement vs. weld repair.

Weld repair is cheaper, IMO. Factor in the time/ it's going to take to swap everything over, to another frame, with the same "known issues".

broken weld in frame is one thing to think about. another thing also to keep in mind is has the frame been twisted/tweaked/bent in anyway to cause the break in the weld.

thread was TLDR most so sorry if repost.

I didn't read all the post but don't "they" cut frames when they're auctioned off but not for street use ?
