LOL, the mods seem super involved over here. I would hate to get "banned" on the internet.

So a helmet and a armored textile/mesh jacket isn't good enough to be considered gear? How many of you suit head to toe just when going to an from work?

How about adding boots and gloves to that "minimum" list? Also, I usually wear kevlar lined pants at the least, usually padded over-pants because it helps keep my pants from smelling like highway at work.

In your opinion how safe are Kevlar pants? I was looking at some cuz they are cheaper!

They'll protect against road rash to a certain extent, but don't provide any padding. I can't remember the guy's name (the guy with the new EBR street bike), but he wrecked recently and his knee pad possibly saved his leg when the bike fell on him. Kevlar won't do that. But, I have had my bike go down on some fresh oil droppings pulling up to a stop light while wearing the Bilt Iron Worker cargo pants and they didn't rip or tear at all. I don't know that this had anything to do with the kevlar vs. the speed at which I hit the ground though. I've had several pair through the years (Red Route, Shift, Bilt) and my only complaint with them is that they are warmer than regular jeans.

With my overpants I can wear shorts and the overpants still provide all the protection I need (impact, abrasion, waterproof). I really like them, and there are several decent pair on a nice closeout price right now:

I think the ones I have are a similar model to the First Gear pants there. I don't know why I went so long without owning them. They don't win any style points, but they're especially nice to have when it's cold or wet.

I've seen mesh over pants, mine (and the ones I posted, I believe) are textile and have a zip in/out thermal liner, and it appears with the First Gear pants a water proof liner as well.

They're warmer than just pants, which is why I've taken to wearing a pair of gym shorts under them. One of the things I like about them though is the full length leg zippers, doesn't take but about a minute to get them on or off.
