You would have to put Marquez on a a scooter to keep him out of the lead. I'm thinking Marquez might be the GOAT if he has a long career. That will leave everyone else, including Rossi, to simply lay blame on their bikes.

I think the guy is just on fire. Or you think Honda Repsol then gives Pedrosa a much worse machine to not finish even second?

I may be wayyy wrong, but I think Marquez would still win even on Dovi's Ducati at any race.

What Freddie was good at was his ability to ride ANY bike to the fullest of his ability and that of the machine. I remember reading an interview in which Freddie recounted his earlier year racing with Honda, where at one point he was given a CB750(? forgot the exact model, but it was a production based machine) to race. Freddie said this thing was so bad that he would make one control input, and the bike would react in 7 different ways. Yet, he was able to control it and went on to win with it. That's talent.

To me, Kenny was far more influential to the racers (and general sport riding public) that followed him, including Freddie. Kenny pioneered a lot of the riding techniques we all take for granted today... including hanging his body off the bike. I read books by Nick Ienatch, Keith Code, etc. and they all credit Kenny as one of the most inspirational racers that influenced their career.

That said, both of these gentlemen would've made history regardless of what machine they rode. Yami and Honda just happen to be their major sponsors.

Kids these days need to have the bike fine tuned to their liking, or else they can't win... and them blame the machine.

Yes, but that is NOT what I meant. He is second in the general championship standings, but he came in 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd and 5th position in the last 5 races so not consecutively 2nd best in every race ... if you know what I mean.

Moreover ... Marquez was in 10th place in France and finished 1st like 4 seconds ahead of Rossi, while Pedrosa could not improve past 5th.

How do you explain WSBK and Honda sweeping the podium at Isle of Man last year?

Maybe Pedrosa would be in 10th in the standings if he wasn't on a Honda

Michael Dunlop and John McGuinness might have had something to do with it

I don't think there has really been any argument. Since the 1000cc switch, Honda has had the better bike. That was the impressive deal about Lorenzo winning the title on a bike that didn't win the manufacturers title. Honda by far has the most money, they use it.

If we say the R&D developed for GP trickles down to the consumer, would there be a consensus that, for the same rider, a production Honda sportbike is a higher quality and offers better performance than the comparable Yami, Kawi or Suzuki?

Or is the argument limited to the just the race machines since they are essentially one-offs.

I love my Honda but... Marquez looks just like Josh Hayes does in AMA. Hayes makes it look too easy to stay way up front and he rides a Yamaha.

2014 Isle of Man TT...qualifying starts tomorrow, racing starts on 31st...Velocity Channel (#1104 on U-Verse).

Dunlop has switched to BMW for 2014...which is a no lose for Honda...if he doesn't kick it will be the bike, if he does kick again it will be the rider.

Why did Rossi switch from honda to Yamaha? Why did Rossi then switch to Ducati? Why did crutchlow switch from a tech 3 Yamaha to a Ducati?

It's not always about having the best bike. If you know you have a better bike and you win was it you or the bike? Like you said pedrosa might normally be a 10th spot rider but given that he has a better bike it makes him get a better result.

The other thing your not mentioning is honda probably pays the best to get the best riders on their bikes.

You sure Honda has a team for Isle of Man?
