Rebuilding a Z50

I picked up a Z50 basket case not too long ago and figured I'd chronicle the rebuild. This is looking more and more like it will be a "resto-mod" than a true restoration to factory spec.

First thing that pops out at me though is the need to address these rims:
yry2u5ar

Left wheel has been wire brushed, after previously looking like the one on the right. So, if anyone has any experience with these, do they seem usable, or best to just replace? I have no experience with tubes, so don't know if the pitted inner surface will be an issue.

Rims should be just fine after cleaning them up. If you are worried about the tube popping, you can alway wrap a layer of duct tape around the rim as a make shift rim strip.

Hmm... how much you looking to get for it? I was going to just toss a Chinese 125cc on there, as it's only $300 shipped and comes with carb, cdi, wiring, etc. A buddy who races minis out in Mississippi says there's a guy he races with who's put 3 hard seasons on one, so I figure it should be fine for putting around my neighborhood. I've got a couple of Honda 50's here, but not sure if they're worth the expense of rebuilding when I can get a 125cc for about the same price as an 88cc big bore kit, gasket set, and a new carb.

I'm tempted on the alloy rims as well, but I've got the 3-bolt hubs and just about everything I've seen is set up for 4-bolt. Drilling and tapping should be simple though. I'll get these cleaned up and see just how bad they are. I've got one spot on the rim I cleaned up that looks a little thin and I may try to add a little more metal with the welder.

I'm trying to get this thrown together for now just to get it operational (and see just how much I'm missing), but once I can get an inventory of what I'm keeping/restoring vs. replacing, I'll shoot you a PM on a powder coat quote. It'll probably be a few weeks as I've got the BMOA rally this weekend, next is devoted to getting my brother's '73 C10 running, and the last weekend in May I'll be taking a weekend riding excursion into Arkansas.

My original thought was to take an old innertube and cut it into strips to wrap around there, a lot like the rim strips used on larger wheels to protect the tube from the spoke nipples. I guess I'll figure it out once I get tires and tubes in.

Guess I should start keeping a running total on what I'm spending...

Purchase price: $180
Tires/tubes: $57.80
Chain: $14.95
Misc nuts/washers/rubber bumpers (Honda OEM): $13.91
Lifan 125cc engine w/ carb, cdi, wiring: $299 (free shipping)
Exhaust: TB Z50 Pipe 72-99 Type 5 (TBW0735) = $103.95
TRC Delrin Fork Bushings: $19.95

Running Total: $689.56

My original target budget was $600-700, since you can find them running for that much on CL, but a lot of the maintenance-type items I'm buying would likely be purchased for one of those anyway, as well as the more performance-oriented modifications.

Oh well, it'll be a fun little bike either way. Now I just need to decide whether or not I want to extend the swing arm...

^^ doing that will trip you out when done. I usually say screw it and just build it like I know it should be done. that way you dont have a total and it wont give you heart failure.

That is to much motor for stunting. But hella fun. I clocked my 125cc at 70 mph. Here is a pic of my 88cc I just finished.

I'm not terribly worried about stunting, I just want a fun little bike to zip around on. I'm thinking I'll eventually upgrade to 10" or 12" wheels and put some street-legal lighting on it so I can get it registered.

My main thought is being competitive next year in the open class dirt drags at the BMOA rally... Have to wait until this weekend to see what kind of stuff shows up to run though. Maybe I can talk them into a "pit bike" category for next year.

Ha, I guess I either overpaid, or inflation has increased the value over the last few years...

Either way, this is roughly what I have at the moment:

When I got the bike from Rob it didn't have the second engine, the hand controls nor the extra grips. All of that was bought separately. So not apples to apples.

I know, I'm just teasing. I don't feel like I got a bad deal at all, nor did I try to talk you down on the price. (Though neither engine, hand controls, nor grips are likely to actually be used on this build )

Not yet. I'm going to look into getting one bonded if I actually try and register it. I doubt I can trace back far enough to find an owner who actually had it in their name.

What about it? Besides needing a clutch lever and cable?

edit: doesn't look like you need a cable bracket
cable: http://tboltusa.com/store/clutch-cab...tch-p-976.html
lever (if you don't want to find one elsewhere): http://tboltusa.com/store/tb-mini-cl...er-p-1742.html
