Good info, but I noticed arai bashing on ECE rating. European helmets like AGV e.t.c brand are ECE and many motoGP riders wear them and survive faster and worse crashes than the average joe. Why didn't they explain this? I researched the SNELL foundation and it's quite something else because at the pressure and shock measurements that SNELL is tested, your head is gonna be inside the helmet anyways. It's Overkill. I'll prefer SNELL cos of it's shell rigidity if I'm racing a car. Research the snell foundation and see why it was created and the what follows it.
ECE is better than DOT, but saying SNELL is superior to ECE is another long argument.

I'll buy 5 decent helmets instead of 1 really nice one....that's like buying a Porsche when a Ford Focus will do the trick to get you from Point A to B. I buy a new lid every 6 months to a year and I have no one to impress with the label on the chinbar. HJC & Scorpion 4 Life. lol

Actually it's more like buying. 5 yugos vs 1 Volvo.

A helmet is not A-B, it's protecting something important, at least to some, lol

I don't care about impressing anyone , I ride a GROM! Lol

Have always worn ( 1 HJC, retired early) Arai, prob always will.

I, too, tend to buy at least one helmet per year, and have only actually retired one due to crash. A few have been sold after a year or so of little use, and I just had my first HJC that has "expired" according to the five-year rule. BUT, if I could pick up an Arai on clearance ($250-300 maybe?), it would only be about 2x-3x what I pay for the HJC/Joe Rocket helmets I like (usually pick them up on clearance around $75-120), and they claim you can wear it 10 years. Twice the longevity at twice the price, for a much nicer helmet? I suppose it's worth a try, if they fit my head.

(The last non-HJC manufactured helmet I bought was a Vemar and one of the shield mounting plates broke when the helmet fell on the ground. Apparently impossible to get that mounting plate in the US, my $250 helmet is now unusable after 2 weeks of use. )

The technical info provided by Arai are all valid and true. I particularly like the bit about expected usable life. I always chuckle when somebody insists that a helmet is good for 5yrs from the date of purchase... like the molecular structures in the helmet materials can actually sense the ringing cash register at a quantum level.

Still, none of this is propriety to Arai. Lots of helmet mfrs following similar design paradigms. I do have one gripe about Arai though, and that is they tend to be a bit too stickler to their own rules - to the point of hurting innovation. A good example is their shield retainter system and the goofy side covers that have been there since... what... when Ronald Reagan was in the White House, and Freddie Spencer was standing on the Podium.

C'mon, Arai. structure integrity is important, but so is daily user-friendliness. I guess that's why I buy Shoei.

i wore scorpion only. one of my scorpion's has a gsxr 600 front tire stripe up the rear of it from a rowdy day of testing a new ninja. i wear AGV now after a subarachnoid hematoma that got me a life flight and ICU visit.

don't skimp on helmets.

im not saying scorpion is bad, it likely saved my life but i put my faith in a better product now. the scorpions are very heavy as well.

funny, I rang my bell in a highside at MSRH in a scorpion. walked away. pretty sure my bell still would have been rung in an Arai or Shoei.

my point is, you're paying for a name and "bells n whistles"...lighter, air flow, yada yada. Does a Volvo have better crash ratings than a Kia? Probably. But both pass the same standard testing to get DOT approval. One just comes with a much larger price tag.

Minimum standards are a wonderful thing. If the min is fine for your head, more power too ya

Not saying "x" brand is a min lid, but you can get bell helmets for $50 @ Wal-Mart why spend so much on a scorpion, lol
