Project that found its way into my garage.....

1980 Yamaha XS650......14k miles on it, my friends dad bought it new in 1980 and its been in the family since. I rebuilt the carbs a few months ago, but she hasnt really ridden it since so its running rough again. Cleaned up the carbs, put a new throttle cable on it......changed out the original chain and sprockets (last time I adjusted it I maxed out the adjusters, and there was still slop in the chain), changed out the original air filters, etc. Waiting on a new cover gasket and front master cylinder to show up. Then its time to clean it up and get it running right!

I had an identical bike in HS (mine was an '81), so I was excited to get to work on it Just thought Id share some pictures of it.

Bounce some ideas off you guys.....replaced the throttle cable, rebuilt the carbs, adjusted the fuel so that is running closer to correct (was running rich on one cylinder, lean on another). Bike runs normal through the first three gears, then seems to fall flat on its face in 4th/5th (wont get over 3k RPM's it seems). Clutch is adjusted and working properly. Ive ordered a new coil and plug wires as I know this is a weak spot of this old 650's, and this could be part of the issue. It has a brand new battery, and the charging system *appears* to be working. It doesnt have the tell tale sound of a cam chain issue, but probably could use some adjustment. It was running fine the last time before the major overhaul (about a year ago, and then it sat). If the coil/plug wires dont work, next up is to pull the carbs again and go through the diaphragms/slides and make sure they are working. Any other thoughts?

Fuel issue. always do a pull in 4th and see how she runs. do the pull and when it falls flat on its face kill the ignition and then coast to stop, then pull plugs and id bet they are crazy white.
its a main jet issue

Ill look into it. I just put the carbs back together today and it has the factory jets in it (made sure they were clean). I did pull the plugs earlier and you could tell one cylinder was lean, and the other was rich.....ive got that ironed out now I believe.
