SHNF "east side trail" RIDE with ODODB

Hey MH, well going to go dirt trail riding in the Sam Houston National Forest Saturday morning at 9am from the EAST SIDE TRAIL HEAD. I'm riding solo so far so we'll see who signs up by then. Will decide on a route when I know who all is showing up for it. I'm driving an ORANGE DODGE truck and riding a 2011 KTM 350sxf number 657, come over and say "HI" if you don't already know me. I've ridden the SHNF for over 35 years and don't get lost out there so come out and join me on a ride. May not be the fastest guy out there, but not the slowest either, even though I am getting older everyday, main thing is, I just love to ride.....

So educate a SHNF noob please, all i can find about the trails is this;
http://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/texa...30198&actid=93

Which of these is the most fun for a dirt noob and not real complicated (say like Hidden Falls)? I've seen alot of reference to the balloon loop, which trail is that?

Thanks, trying to go out there Sunday to play around and do some exploring. Oh, and sorry for the threadjack.

Wasn't out there last Saturday, so wasn't me Brandontx.

Motoloco, we usually get there at 9am and ready to ride between 9:15 and 9:30. If you pull in and see an orange Dodge truck and a KTM 350sxf with number 657 on it come over and we'll wait to leave when you get ready, if you're not there by then, will have to catch you next time. 3 of us going so far, medium pace guys.

Trooper, one of our organizers Andre is riding Sunday at 9:30am from the east side trail head, I may try and make this one too but not sure yet. Andre drives a 80's something old white mustang and pulls a small red open trailer, can't miss him. Introduce yourself to him and tell him you talked to Larry about riding with him. He rides a 02 KTM 200 2-stroke. He's trying to find someone to ride with for Sunday .
PS: Andre's a fairly fast forest rider so might want to pass if your pace isn't moderate at least. He will also ride about 40-50 miles on Sunday.

Thanks, probably would just hold him up. It'll be me and two or three others just looking to do some leisurely exploring, so any advice as to which trails to try? I think they did a burn this week so some trails maybe closed. Calling now to check on that.

Okay, trails south of Kelley's Pond closed due to a bridge being out, they called it the Big Loop. East side and north of 1375 all open.

Trooper, being new to the trails, I would suggest riding the Balloon loop and starting at the north trail head located at hwy 1791 and the north part of forest road 208. When you leave that trailhead, do not cross the road, but head out due east down the trail, it will go about 9 miles and then cross forest road 208. As soon as you cross 208, turn left and that will take you all the way back to 208 again, when you cross it the 2nd time, you will be back at the trailhead you started from. It's about an 18 mile loop. Suggest you take water as it's starting to warm up out there and if your pace is slower will take about 2 to 3 hours to complete.
North trailhead directions, if you come from I45, exit New Waverly, hwy 1375, take it till it deadends about 15 miles at hwy 149, turn right on 149 for a couple of miles, then right on 1791 (Huntsville exit). You'll go down about 5 or 6 miles, after you cross the county line about a mile past is forest road 208, look for the trailhead sign, turn right and the trailhead is only about 50 yards off the hwy 1791.
Have fun guys, stay safe.

Trooper, may or may not ride Sunday, depends on how tired I am after Saturdays ride. If I'm at the trail head at 9:30, I'm riding, if not, well.

I'll be riding the east side sunday morning around 9:30. So far, it looks like I'll be on my own so you're welcome to join me. I'll be in a white 5.0 mustang coupe with a 200EXC.
