Was looking on CL for a Ninja 300. Guy posted for sale on March 27 (still running), then reposted another thread on April 9 with blown motor. I wonder if he knew something was wrong with the bike.

I think we are going to buy a new cylinder head and that should fix all our problems

Damaged caused because nut off the rod bolt backed out. Bearings were no longer lubed, rod bolt backs out completely, bearings spin and burn up and shred, rod cap bends out, and BLAM!

I might swap my 250 parts over into the case. Most of it is interchangeable. I might be able to turn it into a 250 motor lol.

I'm currently working on a letter to Kawasaki regarding this issue and putting together a list of bikes with VINs to source the root cause to a location/factory/time frame. I have reason to believe that this is not the first of its kind.

Yeah there have been a few documented cases where the nuts back off and throw a rod. The folks had their motor rebuilt or replaced completely depending on extent of the damage.

Is it just a TSB or a recall?

Sadly it's neither. Kawasaki is aware that there are those "lemon" motors out there but are not addressing it production wide. I am not sure if they have attempted to source where the bad motors/batch that are failing are coming from.
