That amount of oil didn't leak out of that engine without leaving noticeable traces of oil. That engine didn't consume that oil without leaving a heavily fouled and oily exhaust system. Someone probably serviced (oil change) that engine and failed to replace the oil leading to the engine failure.

The coolant looks awfully dark in post #2 on this thread. . .does it have oil in it by chance?

Yea it's bad. I pulled the head off and noticed that a piston was turned, pulled the cylinder and I found the snapped rod

The other half of the rod is jammed between the crank and the case. I don't know if the crank is hurt or not. I would imagine it is.

Oil was probably emptied when the previous mechanic started investigating what went wrong and was looking for metal shavings in the oil.

I'm guessing the same. I think maybe he took it to redline trying to run it flat out. I know you can float a valve doing that but how did the rod snap? There was oil on the cylinder walls and the piston wasn't seized in the cylinder.
