Police surrounded a downtown parking garage this afternoon after witnesses said they saw two men involved in a carjacking go inside the building, authorities said.

"We're told they are believed to be armed," said John Cannon, a Houston police spokesman.

SWAT officers have been called to the ExxonMobil parking garage, near Bell and Milam.

Witnesses said the men took a car at gunpoint about 3:15 p.m. in the 500 block of Main. They abandoned it a short time later after they were involved in a wreck near the parking garage.

HPD officials are still attempting to confirm what happened.

"We haven't been told of any shots fired or any injuries," Cannon said.

METRO officials announced that because of the police action downtown, METRO is detouring more than a dozen major bus routes that travel Louisiana and Milam.

This includes the 3, 44, 78, 79, 56, 102, 108, 137, 221, 163, 236, 244, 246 and 247.

All northbound buses on Louisiana are making a right on Jefferson, left on San Jacinto, left on Walker and right on Louisiana.

All Park & Ride southbound buses are turning left on Dallas, right on Fannin, and left on Pierce. Local buses heading west of downtown are turning right at St. Joseph to their regular routes.

The car was initially jacked at 315...I do not think that they caught the carjackers who wrecked and ran into the exxon builing parking garage. They shut down a good bit of DT. I do not think that they have been caught yet.
