I know Johnny made 168hp on a Graves piped, reflashed, PCV and his custom map.. He said that's all it had after many hours of tweaking.. Then maybe 5hp for cams and 5-7hp for porting.

Good to see someone is actually trying to manufacture stuff for them.. But I'm always skeptical of numbers.. Based on all my experience.
i totally agree with the numbers being high...but just for reference sake.

Is it possible, despite the weight and power issues, the reason the op had such a bad experience was the suspension was poorly setup?
Often a little tweaking of the knobs can make a huge difference in how a bike handles/feels.
I don't recall the magazines being so harsh on the R1's handling.

Agreed, but even last among liter bikes it doesn't seem like it should handle as badly as the op made it sound.
Maybe in a back to back comparison you would notice that but just going for a ride it shouldn't have been that bad. It's still a modern ss from a major mfr, he made it sound like he was riding a bike from the early 80's

I loved the 98-01 R1s... Hated the 02/03s.. And when the 04/05s came out, they were beautiful monsters.. Tearing up pretty much all of the other liter bikes.. Except maybe the 04 ZX10... Then the 05 GSXR1000 came out and and gave the R1 a good beating.. I still loved the 04-07 R1s.. One of the best all around bikes ever.. Then in 09' with the full remodel, it just didn't live up to the hype. Sure it made a few more HP then the 04-08s but, its additional pork just slowed it down, the midrange power was terrible.. They definitely have potential with serious modding.. And I'm all for that. But they are seriously outclassed these days.. 2012/2013s.... Not much is going to compete with a 2011 and up ZX10 that is derestricted..-- that is the bike to buy these days.

That being said, I'm always for the under dog and love seeing bikes/cars built to perform when they probably shouldn't..

R1 owners? Tell me why you would choose this over a zx-10, s1000, RSv4...etc.
Yeah, you really have to slip the clutch and give it more throttle than on any other bike to get it rolling from a stop. Not a bike you'd want to be on in stop and go traffic or on a route with a lot of intersections.

Nah wasnt the suspension. Ive ridden many "stock" bikes. This one had it wrong, of all the litre bikes its last for sure.

2009 best of it all.. after that it went down south. They offer nothing more than different color schemes, the hotter the color the more hp you get, plus the unbelievable un-flyable (at the fly) 21 settings TC you have to pull over to click in or out
Sorry 6 piston brakes that dont work any better than the 4s..
Word on the street is the new I3 cylinder cross-plane engine is gonna house 200 ponies.. we'll see :finger: yamaha

2009 R1 Owner...first gen Crossplank...hated the heavy !
Ignorance of other better bikes would be the only reason to purchase an R1 in this market.

Competitive at what, though? Highway roll-on """races?"""

The nice thing about the R1 is that, for a litre, it's gentle on rear tires. This makes a big difference when you ride a sportibke like a sportbike, and an even bigger difference when you're endurance road racing.

Being the former owner of an 05 ZX10 and now a 2011, I love this paragraph.

Since my buddy crashed his BMW, I wouldn't mind taking a stab at yours and I need to get a rematch with Gary.
