Test rode a new R1

Holy COW! Why would anyone buy this bike? Its HOT, HEAVY AS and the first gear is jacked to all . I was trying to get it to go and it starts jerking. The yamaha rep said "Thats normal".

Then i took it for a spin...you have to huff to put this bike in a corner.

R1 owners? Tell me why you would choose this over a zx-10, s1000, RSv4...etc.

yup...it is the heaviest...least powered...least flickable of the current liter bikes...

that said...it has a crossplane motor which, depending on what type of enthusiast you are, makes it a special bike...

derestrict the ecu/fuel it correctly...slap on some suspension...gear it correctly...and all that negativity kinda fades and it turns into a taste of what a motogp bike can deliver.

it also has a proven track record when outfitted to sbk status.

if i were looking for a streetbike this would not be anywhere near my first choice though.

I've never liked any of the Yamaha sport bikes I've ridden. The R1 just physically feels bigger than say a CBR. Quite the opposite for their dirt bikes though.

I dig it just for that sweet crossplane noise.

There some straight up squid that lives in our neighborhood. He rides an old cbr600 and he wants a new R1.

When I asked why he told me that he rode a gsxr1000 and it just didn't seem much faster than his 600.

My response was "you know the gsxr has a higher power to weight ratio than an R1, right?"

then he proceeded to argue and I decided to change the subject.

He was just dead set on the idea that the R1 was just in a whole other league compared to the gsxr

Yeah a couple days later he laid his bike down trying to do a wheelie in our neighborhood(fourth or fifth time since I've known him)

I would feel bad if he wasn't such a jackass. He has his exhaust cut off and rides through the neighborhood in first gear.
One week he rode by and was telling me how his bike felt like it was going to fall apart when he shifts gears. I noticed you could visually see the slack in his chain.

I asked him when the last time he had tightened it was and he told me that you shouldn't really have to adjust it. He asked me where I heard that and then pulled the "you just started riding" card on me.

The next time I saw him I noticed he had tightened it LOL

Anyway back to the R1...it's been my personal observation that yamaha is usually the last to incorporate new technology into their SS line.

just look at how many years they held out on adding fuel injection to their 600 line compared to other brands.

07 was the last good year for R1s... As soon as that cross plane junk came out, they went to .. And Yamaha refuses to face reality about that engine..

However they do wake up with a reflash and proper tuning. I know Johnny Cheese coaxed 168hp out of one and I was impressed with that considering what he was working with.. Still more power then the Honda CBR 1000rr... Somewhat on par with a stock piped 07-13' GSXR1000.. Left for dead by the others.

Yeah he's a youngster. Typical late teen early 20's squid. My only association with him is short conversations when he see's me outside and is riding by.

He rides out with no helmet, has no M endorsement, insurance, ect.

Thats cool, but i have a problem with buying a bike then having to buy a performance package to make it competitive. What about the weight issues?

Looks like some good upgrades.. Very reasonably priced head and cam package.. However, their numbers are so inflated it's not even funny..

I could MAYBE see 180rwhp with the pipe/flash/head/cams/custom map... And that's a big maybe.. Still very respectable for only a head, cam swap. They may have seen 185 hp on some MR12 fuel or something.

I know Johnny made 168hp on a Graves piped, reflashed, PCV and his custom map.. He said that's all it had after many hours of tweaking.. Then maybe 5hp for cams and 5-7hp for porting.

Good to see someone is actually trying to manufacture stuff for them.. But I'm always skeptical of numbers.. Based on all my experience.
