KK47 (Kraze Kris)-Daytona AMA Race Report

AMA Daytona
March 13-15, 2014

With only hours left before registration cut-off, Team KK47 was getting Kraze Kris Lillegard signed up for the 2014 AMA Season, starting in Daytona Beach. The clock started ticking with 14 days to pull it all together. New AMA Race License with supporting credentials, birth certificate, passport photo, etc., and oh ya, the bike! A brand new F3 675 waiting in the GP Motoring showroom that was registered for the race just came out of the box. The MV race parts were backordered and delayed in Italy due to World SuperSport win two weeks prior, and everyone buying the parts up. Plan B fairings, rear sets, and clip-ons arrived just days before the team’s departure, and the awesome graphics for the bike, crew and signature cards were finished in the nick of time with a little help from our sponsors and friends. A special thanks goes out to:

Half Fast Group Houston member Mark Shim very generously allowing us to rent his trailer with a moments notice. Without your help, we could not have even gotten the show on the road!

Arriving at Daytona, the sight was amazing, and we had no clue what an adventure we were in for! The only MV Agusta at the track, the goal for day one was to pick up credentials at registration so Kris could get the bike to tech for pre-check advice. A couple of things that we knew were needed, and a lot less than expected. Good news, less work. The new Hindle exhaust gets installed, but the bad news is the MV backorder included the steering stabilizer. It would have been good to have that.

Passing tech inspection, “Stella” had all of 350 street miles on her, and the first time she touched the track, it was at the magical, historically relevant Daytona Motor Speedway. The scheduled 45-minute practice session on Thursday was cut short due to a rock on the track that kicked up, broke the front fender and damaged the radiator on practice lap 13. But no leak, no problem. Decent times for the first go around at 2:03.507; Later that afternoon in his second qualifying lap, Kris slid out in the sand in the Chicane that got a number of seasoned professionals too. After surveying the damage, and an increased focus on the steering stabilizer, a trip to talk with fellow MV racer Mark Juenge at Vesrah Racing resulted in the overnight delivery of a special mounting clip to install the Ohlins steering stabilizer.

It was unlikely that Kris would get another chance to qualify, SuperSport Qualifying Round 2 was at 8am on Friday morning. No need to try without the steering stabilizer, so an appeal to the Race Director got Kris on the grid with his practice results, last row center. Good news! Less stress and now we just needed to fix the bike and set the pit up for the Fan Walk.
The part arrived at Will Call down the street from the track in time to reach the stretch goal of having the bike ready in time for the Fan walk at noon, where we met MV’s Technical Service Manager, Luciano Pin (and Kris enjoyed talking Texcilian for a while). Feeling good and ready to ride, Kris took a quick break to relax and check the final details. At 2:20 when he should have been fully dressed and ready to go, he realized he wasn’t on the official grid. A few calls from the back of the scooter, Kim was able to get Kris on the grid and in position to see what “Stella” can do.

Race 1: Friday, March 14, 2014 – 3pm
Finished 31st ; Best Time: 2:03.462; Ave Lap 2:03.914; Leader 1:53.829; 10 seconds off Pace
A celebratory Japanese steakhouse dinner with two honorary crew members and a well-deserved soak in their hotel hot tub was just what the doctor ordered. While the crew was out cruising Main Street, Kim and Kris stayed and shared some proscribed apple pie with some old Navy salts. A special shout out to men (and ladies) in blue ;-)

Race 2: Saturday, March 15, 2014 – 10am
Finished 34th; Best Time: 2:01.156 Ave Lap 2:02.248; Leader 1:53.517; 8.7 seconds off Pace
Used Race 1 tires; In all the haste of our first professional race weekend, refueling was overlooked, the low fuel indicator came on just before the half way mark.

With 30 Daytona laps on the newly acquired MV Agusta F3, 8.7 seconds off the leader pace isn’t all that bad for Kris’ first professional level race in nearly a decade, and lots of focused recuperation. Well done Kraze Kris  We look forward to the next race in AMA.
