SAVE TEXAS WORLD SPEEDWAY!

Time to start a campaign! Lets get everyone involved. We feel like its worth a shot and this is our playground!

They will vote again March 27th.
http://wtaw.com/2014/03/13/plans-to-...ned-community/

Stock cars circle Texas World Speedway in College Station Texas as a large crowd looks on during a USAC stock car and Indy car doubleheader at the two mile superspeedway

Maybe we can go about it by getting TEXAS to declare this site a Historical! Lots of history and community sentimental value! What do you all think?

FB page coming! Maybe we can get Mario Andretti and even Kevin Schwantz to help us too.

http://www.thc.state.tx.us/public/up...Procedures.pdf

We need to start to do the following.
1. Generate support
2. Beef up subject matter for historical justification
3. Apply to Texas Historical Commission

B. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark Markers

Definition: Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) markers are awarded to structures deemed worthy of preservation for their historical associations and architectural significance. RTHL is a legal designation and comes with a measure of protection; it is the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure, and the designation is required for this type of marker. The RTHL designation becomes effective upon approval by the THC. Official Texas Historical Markers signify the RTHL designation; designation comes only through application to and approval by the THC and must include pubic display of an Official Texas Historical Marker. Owners of RTHL-designated structures must give the THC 60 days written notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. RTHL status is a permanent designation and is not to be removed from the property in the event of a transfer of ownership. Only the THC can remove the designation or recall the marker. The marker must remain with the structure and may not be removed or displayed elsewhere until or unless the THC gives express approval in writing for such action. Once designated as RTHL, properties are subject to provisions of Texas Government Code, Section 442.006(f).

If you make it a historical landmark will they still let people still race on it?

I don't want to see TWS (Texas World Speedway) go, and I have many many fond memories from racing there over a 35+ year period, BUT, you can't blame the developer for wanting to capitalize on his investment.
There's not a single business person among you that would do otherwise.

Campaigning/petitioning to tell someone else what they can or cannot do with their investment flies completely in the face of everything I believe in.

Ben Spies should have tried to save the School House instead of worrying about the Stackhouse. Colin Edwards too. Too many people used these tracks as stepping stones, that the community should have joined together to keep them going for future generations.

So, every stepping stone that takes you and me to better a place in life now deserves our efforts in preserving it's existense?

I think not.

Was any public funding done when the track originated and first built? Anyone know?

You should be required to go back and save the "field of dreams" because they're building an apartment complex in it's place. I think not. Nice gesture...if it's in your heart....but to say Spies and Edwards should have done more to save the place b/c it was a club racing venue early in their careers is what I call...."out there".

I posted this on a FB page of another MH member.

It's a $513 million dollar project. It will generate more in property taxes than it does currently.

Enjoy TWS (Texas World Speedway) while you can, and make great memories.

Time marches on.

Back in 1968? Possibly, but that's been long paid back in spades by property taxes, sales taxes, etc.
So what's your point?
Please be specific.

My point is that the current owners bought TWS (Texas World Speedway) as an investment. Forcing them to forgo any profit from their investment simply because you like riding the track is BS, plain and simple.
It would be no different than if a national chain offered Mark a HUGE sum of money for one of his restaurants, or someone offered Peter a huge sum of money for his mosquito business.
Now, let's say you had your first date with your now wife at Marks place, or because Peters mosquito service does such an awesome job you were able to propose to said wife in August without being carried away by the winged bastards.
Because of this you don't want the place to change. You start up a FB petition page to not allow Mark to sell his restaurant or Peter to sell his business.
How is that any different?

As Tojo said, things change. Racetracks get sold and turned into subdivisions and shopping malls all of the time.
As previously mentioned it's typically the long term goal behind the initial investors: a means of paying property taxes and maybe paying the mortgage until the lands value increases enough to make a desired profit.

Want to save the track? I mean really want to, not just create a bunch of hoopla and pw&moan on the internet?
Come up with a group of like minded investors that will pay the asking price for the property.
Anything else is just a fart in the whirlwind.
