Cruisers, help me please.

My dad got me my first bike when I was 4. He had been riding since he was 16 and got his first enduro which was his daily for a couple years. My mom wrecked her ninja 250 about 1 year before they got a divorce and he sold all the bikes. (except mine) 8 years later he gets another bike. He is a good rider but most of us are. I met up with him and my brother last week to go fishing and i got there, he was gone so was his bike. I walk outa the garage as he pulls up.

the help i need from yall, He never wears gear. :BangHead: how can I talk him into putting a lid on?

dad

I under stand...My dad was the same way until he crashed his electraglide and it hit him in the head while flipping through the air. He was a believer in helmets after that.

A half helmet is better than no helmet and they do look better on cruisers. For his birthday, Christmas or just because he's your dad, buy him a helmet as a gift. Just tell him "Its because I love you."

Has your dad ever fallen off a bike? It took me twice to even start wearing gear.

My dads the same for the most part, it's hard to change they're minds about their riding habits. Not much you can do when your dad is set in his ways.

I've got a few local stories for you. All were cruiser riders.

First one my neighbor. He rode a chopper and only wore the mighty dew rag of protection. He ran off the road into a field going somewhere between 40 to 60 mph. He spent a month in I.C.U. at Ben Taub. Don't know what kind of injuries he had but here's the result. His eyes don't look the same direction. His can no longer ride because his left hand won't operate the clutch more than a few times. He is walking with a cane only. He is not longer able to work.

From what I've heard of the wreck, he mostly slid on his back and his front. I dare say that if he had a helmet, jacket, and pants he'd probably walked away or at least been a lot better off.

Second story is my friend's coworker's husband. He laid his Harley down in the 290 HOV lane. On his way down he realized that he did not have anything protecting his head. So he put his hands ups with no gloves. He ground two fingers off one hand and lost the use of the thumb on the other. He will not be able to ride again or work.

A man and wife were turning a corner here in houston going between 5 to 10 mph when he drug a floorboard and dropped the bike. His wife received a head injury during the fall and died.

A riding buddy of mine came across a guy who went down on a Harley going 20 mph. (Jeans will only slide about 5 feet at 50 mph before wearing through.) The guy ground his to hamburger and left a red streak down the road. He also had a bad head injury.

You can make any point you want from these, but basically it happens right here in Houston, and at any speed. A little gear goes a long way. I agree with buying him a helmet as a gift. I know a lot of older cruiser riders go for the modular flip-up helmets in lieu of a full face helmet. I'd recommend that over a partial helmet anyday.

Most of the bike shops around here do not have good cruiser gear. But I found a good selection at Biker's Passion in Clear Lake. It's on Hwy 3 at Dixie Farm Road just across from Ellington Field. It's run by a guy named, Johnny. He hooked me up with good cruiser leathers complete with body armor. If you go, tell him, Jesse sent you.

Id vouch for what Magnaman said, that bikers passion has descent gear that cruiser guys would wear. Safety and stylish if still is one of his reasons for not wearing gear
