Motorcycle down - Beltway 8

Coming back from Surfside just now, so this wreck was just west of Hwy 288 (maybe around 90 or Fondren exits - I'm tired!). All traffic exited, cops had the beltway shutdown...I look over...motorcycle down

I don't think so. It was a older looking standard or cruiser, which probably equates to no gear, which leads to fatalities. There was also a REALLY messed up looking compact car involved.

Quite true! I saw this in the late 70s...new riders and m/cs pulled out of garages after sitting for 10 years in a corner. While nothing like this past week, it wasn't good.

Offer to help a newbie.

I saw that accident happen I was on BW8 heading toward 288 and they were on the other side heading toward 59. A car flipped over and hit the middle barrier just ahead of me on the other side and as I went by that car I see a car that was braking and a motorcycle sliding into the left back side of the car. He went down on his right side right behind the car. It looked like he had gear on atleast a jacket and helmet from what I could see. The jacket was yellow so I am hoping it was a armored riding jacket. He and the car were probalby still doing about 40 or 50 when he hit.

Hope he was ok, but points to the need for rider education when a bike cannot stop quicker than a car without laying it down.....

i would not jump to conclusions. No one has details. Maybe the car clipped him knocking him off and then the cager freaked out and over corrected and rolled it.

I'm not sure I'm following ya, probably I'm misunderstanding, but were you trying to say a bike stops faster when you lay it down?

no.. he is saying if the biker cant stop faster than the car then the biker needs some education.. but he is also saying that if the biker lays the bike down trying to stop fast he needs to be educated also. just in the same sentence.

I think I may have confused things when I said he slid into the car, maybe not the best choice of words. He was upright when he made contact with the back left side of the car. The rear of the bike was moving left and right and it looked like he had the back brake locked. The car may have been trying to swerve into the left lane while braking hard and that is why he made contact with the left back side of the car. He did not go down until he made contact with the car.

But it happened so fast it was hard to tell if the car swerved into his path or if he was braking and trying to go around and just could not clear the car.
