Thinking of trading my XRR for this...

Thinking of doing a straight trade for this 08 CR500AF, keeping my XR supermoto wheels and lacing them up to the stock hubs. My end goal is to make it street legal. Not sure why but Ive always wanted a CR500AF in SM trim. Im kinda scared this thing would be too insane to ride though and I wouldnt be able to enjoy it.

Choices in life are sometimes to hard to handle

I rode a friends CR500 he converted to a motard years ago out at Oak Hill.
While it was fun I will say it was really hard to turn with the front wheel in the air all of the time.

You could always down tune it for the concrete with sprockets and jetting, but it would still be insane. ask Mr F about his KX250 motard

I rode his KX250 before he rebuilt the motor and I thought it was slow...could of been because the motor was already needing a top end though.

Yea I can see where trying to turn with the front tire in the air would be a problem

I had an '86 cr500. Thing was nuts. Every time the cylinder fired, I took a chunk of asphalt out of the road. If you don't like to kick start that XRR, you'll hate yourself on the cr500. You have to stand on the kick start and give it all you got. It blew a hole through my mx boot and would have broke my foot in a regular shoe when it kicked back at me. As crazy fun as it was, I could only imagine if it had a power valve like the kx. The cr has insane torque and snap, I couldn't ride it offroad, it was just too much. On the street though

I would definitely do it if he wants a straight trade.

A 1992 has the close ratio gear box, they went wide ratio gears in 1993 on the CR500.

What is the word on home made aluminum frames? I would be a bit scared the guy doing it didn't know what he was doing and have it crack in the future.

This is a common mod to stick 500 2T motors in aluminum frames.... From what I understand its just motor mounts that need to be moved around(i dont think the main part of the frame is modified at all). Of course there is always cracking that can occur but Ive seen OEM frames crack. Obviously if the welds look like then you will more than likely run into cracking issues later on. Im not worried about that too much though....

I actually want to plate and tard my KTM300 and but a newer one for dirt duty but would have to sell my XRR first.

The 500 conversions use a CRF450F aluminum frame. The only thing that need to be modded are engine mt/stay and exhaust hangers.
For motard use, your jetting has to be spot on with a 500 - they may not like sustained hi rpm use followed by a throttle chop.
The ultimate would be a KTM 550 2 stroke with powervalve

You have to cut the stock Y-piece out of the engine cradle and weld in a new one. Probably fine though.

Go ride one first. I rode Dan's and it was fast but it vibrated worse than anything I've ever ridden. Couldn't imagine being on that thing at high rpms for more than 20 minutes.
