Halffast CMRA Round 1 Report

For HalfFast, the new season started immediately as the 2013 season ended back in November of last year. With an incredibly rewarding first season, which helped us gain experience in team organization and competiveness skill, we decided to embark on the 2014 season with a second team. This meant preparing 3 bikes: one for each team plus a backup bike. With two teams formed, HalfFast Racing (Joey Gutierrez, Ryan Short, Mark Shim), and HalfFast Beta (Chris palacios, Robert Duong, Umayr Kaleem, Donte Barlow, and Ivan Puente as 5th alternate), the HalfFast Racing Group's technical director and owner of HalfFast Racing Team, Joey Gutierrez took the charge to build and bring the bikes to CMRA standards throughout the entire off season. With all bikes prepared and tested at a MSRH track day the week prior to the first 2014 CMRA round, we had great confidence all machines were as solid as the team structure and were very excited to challenge our first race. With great expectation and anxiety, both team owners, Mark and Joey, made sure to get to the track early (one day prior to the race weekend) to obtain best possible pit spot for both teams. With last checks done, Friday served as both a practice day as well as CMRA license fullfillment day for some of the HalfFast Beta team members. All the machines performed superbly. Joey and the rest of the team member's sweat and efforts over the winter has paid off. With excellent machines and mentally focused teams, the long awaited Saturday was upon all of us. While HalfFast Racing team rider Mark Shim raced two sprint races in the morning, the remaining team members worked on preparing the endurance pit areas. All preparation were done way ahead of most other teams in the most convenient location immediately next to all the bikes, tools, and restroom. The great teamwork predicted a smooth and positive outcome.

Now the race!
(As HalfFast Beta team will detail in its own separate report, this report will present the HalfFast Racing Team's race detail.)
With a two-hour endurance race at MSRH, our team decided on a two racer relay with rider Mark Shim starting the race and Joey Gutierrez completing the second half. With the growth of the sport this year, CMRA had incorporated two more classes to the same grid: the 300 and 500 classes. This unprecedented record attendance created a huge grid with over 30?teams ranging from two-stroke 125cc to a 500cc inline 4. With such large number of teams, the competition was fierce and the expectation of great result was somewhat diminished. Being positioned with the first pack for the start, the flag finally came down. Mark Shim charged on gaining leading position with the front pack. With fast 300cc and 500cc bikes taking the lead, our team's Ninja 250 pushed itself to its limitation to keep up, solidly attained an overall 4th spot, and maintained the pace with the leading group. The position was solidly held as the race continued. However, twenty minutes into the race, a red flag indicated a severe crash. Mark came back to the pit and waited for the track to be cleared.
25 minutes later, the race will re-start with slightly modified grid position. At the dropping of the green flag, Mark charged forward, and tried to regain the previously established position along the leading group. However this time, heavy traffic congestion on turn 1 pulled Mark back a few spot behind. As the bikes spreaded, it gave HalfFast the opportunity to penetrate through the traffic, and going over the Launch, Mark had positioned himself back at the 4th spot.
The race continued, and it was noticeable the speed difference between the HalfFast 250cc bike and the 500cc CBRs'. Mark stated after the race that He felt the 300s and the 500s were predominantly fast, and he did not expect to be on the top 10 overall. However, Halffast was leading it's class, and furthermore, it was in between 5th and 6th spot with only a few bigger bikes ahead of it. Team owner Joey Gutierrez decided to extend Mark's riding time to keep up the momentum. At around 1 hour mark, Mark Shim was signaled to pit in for rider's change. After quick refueling, Joey Gutierrez took over to finish the remaining 25 minutes. By now, HalfFast was 5th overall and 1st in the ESS class with 1 lap gap with the second team. Joey gave all he had to keep that position. The entire pit crew were excited and waited anxiously for the checker flag to drop. Joey maintained the gap, and his pace kept increasing, hence slightly spreading the gap, and giving the team more confidence to it's hope of obtaining the first position finish. By now, the entire HalfFast team was fixed to the timer and it's countdown. Finally, the checker flag dropped, and the first half fast glorious moment was secured. 1st in the class, 5th overall. HalfFast beat all 23 ESS bikes, all f4 bikes, 4 out of 6 Ninja 300’s, and 2 out of 4 CBR500’s.
A great teamwork and effort have finally given fruit of its labor. Our first win!
A great journey that was only possible thanks to great team members and our sponsors. Our utmost appreciation goes to: for keeping us all safe, Ridesmart Motorcycle School, GnS Racing Transport, Whoopie with Bridgestone Tires and Racer’s Inc., Halffast Group, Kpop, and of course our team cheerleaders!!!

Sorry, copying an email and pasting it through Tapatalk through a tiny cell phone while holding a dialysis needle on the arm error. As soon as Joey comes out of the treatment, he will fix it.
Apologies on Joey's behalf for grammar error! : )

Just makes it easier to read, I kept getting lost and had to reread stuff to find my place. I'll see you guys at TWS (Texas World Speedway), hopefully I won't have to help you pick up a bike after a wreck.

HalfFast Beta team

We are a new group of four riders just like last yearís HalfFast team coming into this sport with little to no knowledge. Mark is the team owner of this team and he graciously provided us a bike to race this year (BIG THANK YOU AGAIN MARK! Without your help we would not be racing this year). The team consists of Umary, Robert, Donte, and myself as team Captain. Luckily we had our brothers to guide us through most of the way. We received lots of help with prepping the bike and what to do on race day. So now itís time to get on the track and actually race!

I could see the excitement and nervousness of my two racers Umary and Robert that morning. I just kept letting them know just go out and have some fun. Nobody will yell at them for up or coming in last. I chose Umayr to start the race since he had the most time to practice. Umayr's launch was pretty good and gets a good jump on a few people. Unfortunately after about two laps he came in saying that fuel was leaking out. So we kept our cool so me and Ryan switched out the fuel cap with the original stock one (I believe Joey sabotaged our bike so we would not do better than they did on their first race lol). So Ryan and I switch it out in 5 minutes and send Umayr on his way telling him to keep his cool. He was able to keep a good pace with most of the riders on the grid. Lap after lap I could tell he was getting comfortable on the bike and making some good clean passes. With an unfortunate event there was a crash and luckily Umayr kept it up on two wheels when it happened in front of him.

After the track was cleaned up Robert was next up so that means he had to do a start. We decided to do 20 minute stints so both riders can accomplish their prov nov requirement. He was a bit nervous since he did not have too much time on the bike and has not ridden on the track for about a year. He keeps his cool during the race and keeping a good pace and making sure he doesnít go down. Umayr goes back for his last 20 minute stint and with only 9 minutes left we send Robert back out hoping that it would count for his last stint. Unfortunately Robertsís last stint was not long enough to count towards his requirement so he will be wearing his yellow shirt at ECR. We finished 19th in our class and 31st overall. Last year HalfFast alpha placed 21st in their class and all I wanted was to do better than what they did last year haha!

We had a great time, even though I did not race it was still exciting to watch the Alpha team get their first win!
