It's not like this is a new idea. The Pharaohs of Egypt were famous for it. My guess is knowing that this was going to happen the way he wanted when he was gone gave him a sense of control over his life. Under the circumstances (specifically dying of cancer) I'd say that's a pretty rare and worthwhile thing.
