it is funny good gear will keep you from getting rash or even bruising the skin. It however will let you slow down so fast when you hit the gravel traps that the weight of one side of your body pushing on the other will break a lot of your bones.

2003 WERA race at Barber MSP I was doing fine until I hit the gravel trap the bike was about 20 ft to the side of me at that time. Not a bruise on my skin anywhere even the next week broken Clavicle, Scapula, and one or 2 ribs.
